Breaking News at B.R.I.

for the Week of

October 19, 2009

·         Federal Cards will be sent home on Tuesday, October 27. Please fill these very important cards out completely. There is both a front and back section. Most importantly, please do not forget to sign the card. Any child who returns their completed Federal Card on Wednesday, 28, will receive a trip to the candy basket and 3 raffle tickets.

·         The children are finishing their poetry for the PTA’s Reflections Program. We almost have 100%, which would mean everyone would get to go to the donut reception. I have also offered an extra donut morning in my room for the class that finishes first. In order for this to happen, I must also have a signed Reflections form for each child. If you have not sent in your signed form, please send it in as soon as possible. This is a great way to show the PTA support.

Reading Corner

Reading Logs: I have explained the Reading Log to the students. I have also posted a letter to parents on Edline in the Homework folder. Please sign the Planner each Thursday night to indicate that your child has consistently read and recorded their pages each night.

Read Aloud:  My read aloud is The Black Pearl by Scott O’Dell. I will use this book for mini-lessons appropriate to the SOLs.

Literature Circles:  I am in the process of completing assessments for your child’s reading level. These should be done and children in flexible groups by mid-October.

Word Study: I have completed assessments for Word Study groups. Students will be placed in groups.

I have posted the homework Choice Board on Edline.

DLR Test: Your child will receive a paragraph to edit evey other week We will correct it together on the Smartboard. Mini-lessons will be taught for the test. These paragraphs and notes should be found on a dated page in their Word Study notebooks. Please see Edline for dates.

Math & Science Investigations

Math:  Please read about what the children are learning in math.

We have completed SOL 4.7 – Multiplication!  Our next SOL will be  4.8 – Long Division!

4.8     The student will estimate and find the quotient of two whole numbers, given a one-digit divisor.

I am so proud of those students who have memorized their times tables! Learning long division will be much easier with their fact knowledge.

Please keep encouraging students who do not know their multiplication tables to practice them nightly!  Students who do not know them tend to struggle through the more challenging SOLs.

Math news reminder:

We often use dry erase markers in math, and though I have nearly enough for everyone to borrow one, my supply is continuously running out.  If you child has access to their own dry erase marker it would be helpful if they could bring it to math each day!

Science:

We have completed our second SOL, 4.5 – Living Systems!  We are now ready to begin lead-up activities that will prepare us for our culminating project at the end of the first nine weeks.  I will be asking the children to bring in some recycled materials shortly (cereal boxes, clean milk jugs, egg cartons) so they might want to start saving some of these things!  Please try not to send anything to school until your child tells you we are ready J   Thank you!

Social Studies Adventures

We have begun our study of the geographic Regions of Virginia. This is a fun unit that the children enjoy. The unit project will be done at school as an extension. Towards the end of the unit, the children get to make Salt Relief Maps. This is an activity they look forward to doing. I will need each child to bring in a piece of stiff cardboard measuring around 10 inches by 18 inches. Medium pizza boxes work great. I will also need 3 parents from each homeroom to make the dough (salt, flour, water). I will also need 2 parents to come in the day we do the maps to help out during your child’s class time.

HOMEWORK – We rarely have homework in social studies, however, I have a calendar on Edline which will let you know if any is going to be assigned.
