What would you be doing if you weren’t an actor? “I would probably still be in show business. More than likely, I would have gone into the camera department and would have one day become a cameraman. It's hard after having worked in the movie business to think about doing anything else because the people and the work are so great.” - TV Guide chat, March 2000. Matheson was always interested in acting- writing and acting one-act plays and enrolling in an acting class where he quickly got noticed. Since his first role on the series Window On Mainstreet in 1961 at age 14, Matheson’s career snowballed to over 80 big and small screen film roles, and plenty of voice acting.
Matheson did take a break, however, when he joined the Marine Corps in 1967, graduated college and then entered another four years of serious study at the Actors and Directors Lab in L.A. He did all this while still under contract with Universal Studios and appearing in series like Bonanza and The Virginian. He is recognized most from Animal House, Fletch, and as Carol’s first husband from A Very Brady Sequel.
Matheson’s aptitude for behind-the-scenes work combined with his experience in the military when he directed Breach of Conduct (1994) and In The Company Of Spies (1999). Matheson’s latest work as director is Hellswarm, a sci-fi thriller telefilm for UPN.
Matheson is married and has three children age six, 12 and 13.
