Local History
Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity at Texas Tech University began when in the spring of 1998, Ernesto Ramos, Chris Fuentes, and Gerry Ornelas discussed the idea of forming a new fraternity on campus At the same time, Oscar Baeza, Jr. had arrived from The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he had been an organizing member of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity as well. The national office, recognizing the two parties, communicated them to each other.
Soon there after, members from the Hispanic Student Society and from throughout The University formed an interest group and called themselves Sociedad de Hermanos Latinos (SHL). They became associate members on October 11, 1998 and worked until January 16, 1999 to become full brothers Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc.
Purposes
S Promote the success of students through the integration of education, culture and self.
L Cooperate with the efforts of student organizations, The University, and the community.
B Model the Renaissance Hispanic, recognizing our bicultural nature, the
Hispanic/Latino heritage the American mainstream.
