Cindy's Botany Information
A little about me...I am an inspiring botanist/arborist. I attend college in Ft. Worth, TX majoring in horticulture. I love trees, plants, flowers and anything that has to do with nature. I am a very "outdoorsy" type of person.

Here are some interesting facts:

1. An onion is not a root, it is a tunicate bulb.

2. A potato is a tuber which is an underground swollen stem; comes from the Latin word meaning "lump".

3. Roses have prickles, not thorns. Thorns only grow on trees such as Mesquite.

4. Poinsettias have red bracts. Bracts are modified leaves that subtend an individual flower. The actual flower is yellow and found in the middle of the bract.

5. The 3 numbers on a bag of fertilizer stand for (in order) Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium. Nitrogen helps the plant to stay green and aids in leaf production. Phosphorus aids in fruit, root, and flower production. Potassium helps plants stay hardy during extreme weather conditions.

6. Don't rake your leaves. Mow over them instead. This turns them into mulch and helps your soil. This is much better for your yard.

7. Most trees are deciduous, meaning that at one point they shed all of their leaves. An evergreen sheds its leaves a little at a time without loosing them all at once therefore appearing to have foliage on them all the time. Some evergreens include pines, junipers, and live oaks to name a few.
My absolute favorite evergreen tree! (southern magnolia)
