Disclaimer: Mulder and Scully belong to each other and to Chris Carter,
1013 Productions, and the FOX Network. Not us. Boo hoo.

They both crept towards the old building. The old,
abandoned building that used to be a factory of some
sort. A scribbled address on a scrap of paper was all
they had been given from their alternate source,
which lead them here. On another wild goose chase for
the ever evading truth.

Of course they were both tired of it. Tired of the
search for the truth, tired of their same old
positions of skeptic doctor and believer agent . . .
tired of, also, not being able to ever really relax or
savor the good things in life. Including each other.

Mulder opened the door, and as if out of a comic book
it let out a rusty creek. To his surprise, the room
was lit. But it was entirely by red light. Large
factory lamps all over, with red bulbs.

This brought on a memory he had of something a friend
had once told him. He couldnt help but grin at the
memory. For some reason he felt compelled to tell his
partner. Shed find it amusing, anyway.

"Hey, Scully, do you know the effect of red light on
people?"

"Effect? What effect?" she asked, almost wearily.

His grin broadened.

"A psychologist once did a study on it. He invited his
students, equal number of men and women, to a party.
By the end of the party they were all paired off
and, ah, amorously involved . . .the party was lit by
only red light."

She raised an eyebrow at him. "Hmm. Well, just let me
know if you feel any tendencies, and we can go back
outside." she said, with a rarely seen wicked smile.
He was a bit shocked on her sly rebuttal, so before he
could reply, she had stepped inside the building. He
stepped in after her.

Swish! Like stepping through a portal, he entered the
red lit world. Its interesting how light can make
things look so different. Everything was bathed in
blood red, and seemed to move in slow motion.
The agents scanned the room, slowly making their way
through the building. They werent sure exactly what
they were looking for, just anything out of the
ordinary.

Mulder was thinking about the red lights, amused at
the thought that they might actually do something. He
tried to feel if they had effected him. Not really, he
thought. He didnt feel any different. Its just the
world had changed to red.

They combed over the area carefully, breaking up to
search the downstairs. They werent, however, having
much luck.

"Im not finding anything. We better check upstairs."

They ascended the stairway together, cautious as years
of being careful had made them. The silly red light
story still played at the back of Mulders mind. As he
was a believer of many things, he did not entirely
dismiss the idea and thought it to be a good way of
testing it. Focusing ahead of himself, he did realize
with some degree of shock that Scully did look better
in the red light.

He looked at her beautiful red hair, illuminated and
even red-der than normal. Her maroon pantsuit, almost
black in the light. Her red lipstick shining
brightly. Those lips...those pouty lips...the ones he
had once kissed. His thoughts went back to New Year's
Eve in the hospital. Was that kiss 'just' a friendly
kiss? Was it a sympathy kiss? Could it lead to
something else?

He shook his head, trying to clear his mind. He
focused on the task ahead...*what are we looking for?*
he thought. He had completely forgotten.

He cleared his throat before speaking.

"Scully...um...this is gonna sound stupid..."

She cut him off with a strangled chuckle. The kind
that sounds like it's coming out of your nose.

He glanced at her sideways. "What?" he asked,
pretending to be hurt.

"Nothing." she said, "What were you going to say?"

He sighed, "What...exactly are we looking for?"

She stopped dead in her tracks. "Mulder...are you
feeling OK?"

"What do you mean?"

"I'm usually the one asking that question."

"Well..." he said, twitching sheepishly, "...it's my
turn. Now, what are we looking for?"

Scully sighed, a smile on her face. "We were called
down here by a tenant from the apartment building
across the street. He says that lots of people living
there have moved out, complaining about noises heard
here. This has been going on for the past 3 months.
A few daredevils volunteered to spend the night to
find out what it was and they never came back. They
supposedly disappeared."

"Oh yeah," Mulder said, staring at the wall behind
her, "I remember now."

Scully rolled her eyes and continued up the stairs,
leaving Mulder to trail behind.

They entered the door at the top of the staircase, the
room the missing people slept in. It was light
outside, but you couldn't tell from the inside of the
room. All the windows were boarded up and any way of
escape was impossible, save the door. Scully ventured
off to the right, while Mulder headed left. He was
searching through a closet when Scully called out his
name. He quickly appeared at her side.

"Look at this, Mulder," she said, dipping her gloved
hand into a gooey substance.

"What is it?" he asked. He couldn't tell because of
the red light.

"It's blood."

Suddenly the door they had entered, the only way out,
slammed shut. Mulder was trying to re-open it when
the red lights flickered off.

"Mulder!" Scully shouted.

"Scully! Are you OK?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. Where are you?"

He walked blindly through the room, bumping into her.
They both cried out, then clasped their hands
together.

"What the hell just happened?" she asked.

"I have no idea."

The light suddenly came back on. The two partners
noticed that they had gotten closer to each other than
just holding hands. They were in a full embrace.
Scully looked up at Mulder, her lower lip shaking.

Mulder smirked, his heart pounding. "Scully?"

"Yeah?" she whispered.

"Remember when you told me to let you know if I had
any tendencies?"

"Yeah."

"I'm having some."

She blinked nervously, looking away. He heard her
mumble something, but didn't quite understand it.

"What Scully?" he asked, forcing her to face him,
their lips inches apart.

"I'm having tendencies, too" she said softly, looking
into Mulder's eyes. Mulder looked at her, trying to
read her mind and saw the look of need and want in her
eyes.

Mulder bent his down closer to Scully's and his lips gently
touched hers. Memories of their 'Millennium' kiss flooded
into Mulder's brain as he softly kissed her lips. He felt
Scully gently pull away and saw her look away.

"Scully?"

She looked at Mulder and without a word, kissed him.

The two gently kissed each other for a few moments before
they pulled away. The red light was still beaming overhead.

"Still having tendencies?" Mulder asked.

Scully nodded.

Mulder took that as his cue and leaned in to kiss Scully more
passionately. The passion within his soul unwind as he
kissed her deeply. The passion that he kept hidden for
7 long years was finally free to run it's course. He felt
Scully's kiss flow through his system. and felt a burst
of total relaxation flower through out.

Scully let out a moan when she felt Mulder wrapping
his arms around her neck. She couldn't believe
that hadn't done this sooner. She felt Mulder's
soft lips part from hers and they both took
a minute to breathe.

"I guess I now know what red light does to a person,"
Scully said, looking at Mulder who was wearing a slight
grin.

"Yeah, guess so."

He leaned to kiss Scully's lip again, but the red lights
flickered and the door mysteriously opened with
a creaking noise. Mulder looked at Scully in
amazement.

"You think we should go?" Mulder asked pointing to the door.

"Yes, I think we should," his partner answer as she was
already walking toward the door. Mulder followed her
to the car.

"What do you think happened in there?"

"I don't know how to explain the disappearances..." Scully trailed off.
She looked at Mulder and sighed. "But what..we did, it's because
of the red light, just as you said."

Mulder's frown tighten. He looked at Scully.

"Did you...did you want that?" he asked her gently.

She looked at Mulder feeling her cheeks start to grow warm. She
did want Mulder to kiss her. She did want that happen. And
this time, there was not going to be any covering it up, either.

"Yes, I have for so long...it seems like the knot in
my stomach as untangled since we've kissed," she confessed.

Mulder smiled slowly.

"I feel the same way."

Scully smiled as she opened the passenger side door and slid inside
the car. Mulder moved to the other side of the car and got in. He
turned to Scully, who was still smiling.

"You think we need to test and see if it was the red light that
caused us to do that?" Mulder asked grinning.

Scully shot him a look, but with a smile.

"I think we could test it."
