Text Box: In the fall of 2001, in Corpus Christi the FIRST Texas girls scholastic chess championships “by the bay” was held! Over 100 girls played. Every one who played got a 25% off on the entry fee to the state scholastic championships in March, but, if you got a positive score you got 50% off. There were 4 sections high school, middle school, elementary and primary.The winner of the high school section Laura Lindzey went undefeated along with Middle school champion Geeta Persad and elementary champion Emily Breeding. In the primary section there was a tie for first between Serena Zadoo (who came in 1st) & Kristy Eng both with 5 points. All the first place winners got a traditional golden cup. The cup will have their name engraved on a plate and next year they must bring it back and can play for it again. There also was a mother - daughter tournament and the winners were, 1st place Lindzey-Hardesty team, 2nd  Emily & Susan Breeding, and 3rd Stephanie & TeCora Ballom. The Girls Championship was smoothly run by several excellent female T.D.’s and chief tournament dir. Brenda Hardesty!
