2000 U.S. National Junior Marathon Team Selection Process

The proposes of the selection process are: to select a National Team of junior athletes to develop for representing the United States in International Canoe Federation competitions and; to select from this group, athletes that will be competitive at the World Championships. The program will help develop juniors in the canoe & kayak sport of Marathon so that future senior teams may become more competitive in world competitions. Junior team is unlimited in size provided qualifications are meet. A World Team will be selected from the most qualified Junior team members.

Junior Team Eligibility:

For this selection process anyone 18 years or under in the year of the selection will be eligible for team status however only juniors 15-18 will be eligible for world team status. The first year a junior competitor can compete in international competition is the year in which his/her l5th birthday falls, and the last year he/ she may compete as a junior is the year in which his/her l8th birthday falls.

To make the U. S. Junior National Marathon Team one must:

Participate at U.S. Junior & Senior Team Trials and Nationals OR apply as follows:

  1. Submit to the marathon selection committee a statement of request signed by the athlete. The statement of request should include a record or the athlete’s involvement in canoe sport, paddling history, years paddled, years racing, races entered, future plans etc. Include any participation in any disciplines of canoe sport. (Sprint, marathon, slalom, recreation, polling, polo, canoe sailing, war canoe, dragon boat, etc.) Also include date of birth, mailing address, Phone number, and E-mail address if available.
  1. The applicant must have competed and finished, under his or her own power, a race of 10K or longer. The race may be completed in any solo paddle craft using a canoe or kayak paddle. (USCA, ICF, recreational, surf ski, outrigger, white water, etc.)
  1. Submit to the committee a statement signed by the race organizer, that the athlete has accomplished the task (2) above. The statement should have the race name, date, location and class entered.

Making the World Team:

  1. The top 2 finishers in the singles events as well as the first place finisher in K-2 will be automatically selected to the Team.
  2. The next athletes selected will be based on the singles event to a total number of athletes required to fill the events.
  3. The number will be based on whether the K-2 winners are also the first two singles and whether they intend to race those events at the World Championships.
  4. Athletes claiming automatic berths have one (1) hour after the final results are published to commit to the participating in the Junior World Championships.
  5. If athletes decline an entry whether it be singles or tandem the spot may be filled from the singles pool.
  6. Only the automatic qualifiers claim a specific event, the team management consisting of the Marathon Team Selection Committee and Junior Team Coach will complete the entries based upon the remaining pool athletes.
