2002 USA Canoe/Kayak Marathon Sr. Team Selection

The purpose of the selection process is to select athletes to develop for representing the United States in International Canoe Federation competitions and to select from this group, the fastest athletes that will be competitive at World championships.

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR TEAM STATUS

To be considered for the U.S. Senior National Marathon Team one must participate at the U.S. Trials or have a trials exemption request approved by the Marathon Team Selection Committee. Exemption requests should be sent to the marathon Chairperson and include previous race times at international races or other supporting performance results. Examples of exemptions that might be approved: death of a family member, or other conflict that prevent an athlete from attending Team Trials. Requests must be received in writing prior to the Team Trials date. Verbal requests to the Marathon Team Selection Committee will only be accepted if time does not permit a written request. The request will still be needed in writing.

The committee may also review requests for team status from athletes that have moved to the United States after the trials date. These Athletes will need to comply with Section 1.3 of the ICF Racing Rules.

MAKING NATIONAL TEAM STATUS

The National Team will consist of 12 men (Kayak), 12 women (Kayak), and 12 men (Canoe). The first 12 to finish in the singles race (K-1 Men, K-1 Women, C1 Men) will be selected. The Committee reserves the right to fill more positions from doubles or exempted athletes. These positions may be used for athletes that were exempted from trials, approved for team status or that the committee believes would have qualified for the team but had equipment failure during the race. Team status may be given, if approved by the committee, at any time after the trials date. Selection for World Cup events will be filled from the results of the singles try out starting with the first finisher.
