Working Moms
I recently heard a woman say that being called a "work at home mom" was professionally demeaning. Being one myself, my initial reaction was to agree with her.
Than I realized just how much our society looks down on women who make the decision to stay at home with their children. I was raised in a very old fashioned way by my grandfather that women stay at home and raise the children ,
I fought this early in my marriage and than realized it was what I truly wanted after all having been raised a latchkey child due to my mothers divorce
I remeber beiing offended in a grocery store in 1991as I was trying to pay and strugling with three babies (mine our 1 year apart, the oldest is just 2 years older Than his two younger siblings))
when a store manager a young man in his 30's looked at me and said as i was writing out the check "Do you work ?"
And my initial response was "no" , as I was walking out the store I realized with a start " Yes!!! I do work 24 hours a day 7 days a week with no paid vacation , no medical leave and my retirement was dependant on my husband !
I was so incensed still an hour later I went to the bank and had new checks made up that above my name read
" Household management"
I never got asked again with those checks if I worked , and to me thats very sad that a name printed on checks could elevate an opinion of me to total strangers.
My husband as much as I love him has himself many times in arguments said I didn't contribute to the household. This is a sore point with me that not only did I have to fight society's opinions but also in my own home. My husband is a san Antonio Police Officer and I love dearly we go thru up and downs in our marriage but we persevere in our love and thats what enables me to bear thru anything is when he looks at me and calls me "love" and says he's sorry , but I digress from my point
I have done many things out of my home to earn extra money ,
- I repair computers
- I devise Parrot breeder internet sites
- I sold web pages
- I bred the small parrots
- I gave classes in a little church on how to breed small parrots for extra money
- I started a newsletter and sold subscriptions
- I sold crafts at craft shows
- I made and sold decorated bears thru the internet
- I started doing weddings with my mother, she made the cakes and I decorated
- I started a bird exhibition I'm proud to say grew to 200 exhibitors and 5000 thru the door ($I made 35,000 that year)
I started in the Pokemon craze and started selling cards at the flea market and became known as "POKEMOM"
