This pioneer custom may not have originated in Texas but it was without doubt
practiced there.
Pioneer cabin doors were secured only by a
wooden latch and a string attached to that latch would pull it up and
allow the door to open. When the
latchstring was outside the door, anyone could enter.
If the resident was home and did not want to be
disturbed, the latchstring was pulled to the inside of the door.
Many pioneers were justly proud of the fact that they gave food,
lodging and a warm welcome to anyone who came along. Thus the saying, "the
latchstring is always out", came to mean a home where a traveler could always
find friendliness and hospitality.

out one with a coin box attached. In order to keep it running you had to
put 25 cents a day in the slot. These quarters then made the payments on
the new "box."
