Socialism: Is it really Dead?
David Morris
The word "socialism" does not excite many people.  It is viewed as an anachronism, even in Europe  Tony Blaiir has taken the word out of the Labor Party platform.

Myself, I believe  that socialism is relevant because it is the intellectual underpinnings of the Left.  To be sure, nobody says "socialsm always, but capitalism never."  And yet we do have programs to help retirees, poor children, poor families and we have Medicaid for all poor people.

Where did these programs come from?  The American programs were modeled after programs started in Europe by Socialist parties.

To me, a socialist nation is one with large government programs and  a powerfull trade-movement.  Socialism must be combined with other good ideas like capitalism and liberal democracy to work.  I think socialism has benefited our society and I hope it keeps expanding.
