My 1st show was Sept 28, 1975 - Golden Gate Park. I had moved out to Northern California to go to college, and a friend called and asked if I wanted to go to to a free concert in the city. Being new to the area (Kansas girl) I was up for anything! Always loved music and going to concerts! We got there and it was Jefferson Starship and the Grateful Dead. I had heard parts of American Beauty and Workingmans Dead. Of course Truckin had airplay, yes even in Kansas! Well, thats all she wrote folks...I was absolutely hooked...and I spent the next 20 years going to shows on my summer vacation. Every show was a remarkable one! Towards the end, I really missed the smaller venues. Seemed like the crowd kept getting younger and younger, I never thought for a minute I might be getting older!! One of my favorite stories: Laguna Seca - May '87 1st show we missed due to our van broke down enroute, somewhere in Los Gatos. We ended up renting a car at the San Jose Airport and drove down to Monterrey from there. We pulled in just as the show was letting out, close to sunset. We heard drums and music in the distance, walked to that area where a band was playing protest songs about animal experiments at UC Davis. We met our friend Chad that night,( whos turned out to be a life long friend), and he took us on a tour of the campgrounds. The fog was really rolling in thick, and you could hardly see 2 feet in front of you, we winded our way thru the grounds, only to hear the Dead start playing!..Well after little or no sleep and a dinner of mushrooms and beer, we were feeling pretty happy! We found our way to the venue, only to look up at the stage with the band up there playing a song we weren't familiar with. We commented on how much weight Jerry had lost since his coma the year before. All of the sudden...the music just stopped and the band just sort of stooped over..then we realized...it wasnt the band at all....it was marionette puppet skeletons, they were making the "Touch of Grey" video!!........We laughed at ourselves really hard, and enjoyed the rest of the evening watching the production, and being a part of the crowd for the video...by the way thats REAL fog rolling thru the stage, in case ya ever wondered. |
