Hello , I am new in cyber-world so I hope you get this. I
saw the Dead and Allman Bros. play together with the Marshall Tucker Band the Doug Sahm
Band. This happened in 105 dregree temp. on the hot and humid days of Sat. June 9 &
Sun. the 10th 1972 -3 or 4 at RFK Stadium in Wash. D.C. Talk about great shows. The one I
saw(can't remember which, except that the Dead played 1st at my show) seemed like
Eternity.Maybe it was the acid or the heat but I remember the Dead playing for about 4
hrs. or more in what was a dust bowl. After that, the Heads I came from Jersey with took a
break on the 3rd base field seats to sell some herb and eat a watermelon that I carried 20
some blocks thru the ghetto of D.C. the nite before.(We were so high that nite we even
stopped in an arcade to play games.Every black person in the hall thought we were fuckin'
crazy till they found out what our destination was.Turns out they were going. We drank
their beer, they smoked our dope and gave us an escort with the watermelon to the
stadium.New friends were found by all). Some guy then found a waterhose for the baseball
field and proceeded to drench everyone in range AND 3 lbs. of pot. We dried it in the sun
and resumed getting high. This was only midday! After the next bands the Allman Bros.came
out and did what might have been a 5 or more hour set. But I do definately remember them
ending with a 45min. version of Whipping Post as I sat in the centerfield bleachers
watching the
sunset on one of the greatest days in the annals of music. I know I can't be the only who
thinks that. So, you ask, why am I telling you this? I have been thinking about this show
alot since meeting with friends (who were there) on New Years Eve to fullfill a pact we
made in that same time zone 25+ yrs.
ago.We talked about the show and well, Nobody forgets days like that.I do know that the
show I saw did occur for sure because I am looking at the original program. The program
has no year listed but it does show that Electric Factory Concerts from Philly presented
the show.I live in Camden N.J. and never missed a show at the Spectrum in Philly. I also
saw the show with Dead & Dylan at JFK in Philly the day they litterally tore the house
down.It rocked till the aging stadium actually started to split in the concrete seating
area. Officials shut it down permanantly the next day(The Stones did use it for rehearsal
for the opening of their Steel Wheels tour in Philly at Veterns stadium) It's been real.
Or imagined.
