My new shelf unit

For the past month or so, I have been working on building a custom wall unit to display and store my models. I have finished half of it and thought I would share the results so far. The first picture below is a shot of the whole cabinet/shelf unit. This takes up half the one wall. I plan on building another one on the other side of the wall. That will leave a gap for the window in the middle of the wall, as well as a gap for either the stand that is there now, or the console TV that is also in the room.

As you can see from the pic, there is a cabinet on the bottom with plenty of storage space for my unbuilt kits, tools, paints, etc. I built it with sliding doors, so I don't have to worry about regular doors getting in the way. Just to the left of this is a doorway, so not blocking traffic had to be taken into consideration. The top of the cabinet makes a nice 24" deep platform for displaying larger items. Above that is the display shelves. I made a couple of them 12" deep, and the others 6" deep. Which gives me 5 shelves to display my goodies. Not all the kits pictured are my work. I figured I might as well display the built-ups that I have bought and haven't gotten around to working on yet.

Originally, I had intended to make this big enough to display all my Prehistoric Scenes kits together. But, as you can see from the pictures below, it didn't quite work out that way. The plan now is to display half on one unit, and the other half on the other unit. I figure that I will split them where the Cave meets the Mammoth. There isn't much of a conection there anyways.

As you can see from the picture above, the group of kits with the cave end up being a little wider than the shelf. That shouldn't be a problem though. When I build the second part of the wall unit, there is going to be a set of shelves running along the adjacent wall. They will be the same hight as the base cabinet, so that will give me an L shaped platform to use for the kits.
Now that I have this much done, I'm going to take a break for a while and get some actually modeling done. When I am doing a bunch of woodworking, I just can't get in the mood to do models.
