The Futures in Star Trek, pg 1
This page explores the various instances when the possible future of Star Trek's timeline (namely that of TNG, DS9, VOY, and to a certain extent ENT and TOS) is glimpsed into during various episodes of each series. In fact, this section is inspired by the book Star Trek Chronology 2nd Ed. (1996), which is seriously outdated by now (2003) and in dire need of revisions. Too bad the authors have expressed no interest in producing another of such books, citing the exhausive research involved in such an undertaking and their current heavy workload.

Nevermind all that. Now on to the discussions.....
TNG: "Firstborn" (occurred in 2370, TNG Season 7)
In this episode, Worf meets a Klingon named K'mtar who claims to be a family friend and was sent by Worf's brother Kurn to protect against an attack on Worf and his family. K'mtar was later revealed to be Alexander, Worf's son, who came from forty years in the future.

In this Alexander's future, Alexander had grown up to be a diplomat and a peacemaker. He had sought to end the destructive feuding between the great Klingon houses, but Alexander's efforts tragically led to Worf's murder on the floor of the Klingon High Council. Filled with remorse, Alexander traveled back in time from the year 2410 to 2370 in an attempt to cause his younger self to become a Klingon warrior and lead a different life, possibly one which may not lead to Worf's murder.
Alexander, son of Worf, from 2410.
It is possible that the future Alexander's attempt at changing his past might have had some effects. The younger Alexander enlisted in the Klingon Defense Force, and served with his father Worf aboard the Klingon bird-of-prey IKS Rotarran during the Dominion War in 2374. ("Sons and Daughters" [DS9]). It is not known whether Alexander will continue to pursue a warrior's life. The episode also suggests that Worf may play a role in Klingon politics by the year 2410.
TNG: "All Good Things..." (occurred in 2370, TNG Season 7)
Assuming that the alternate future experienced by Picard was not just an illusion created by Q, in this episode, Picard was brought 25 years into the future, to the year 2395, to investigate the anti-time phenomenon and hopefully save humanity.

In this future, the Klingon Empire had conquered the Romulans, and the neutral zone between the Romulan Star Empire and the  Federation ceased to exist by 2395. Relations between the Klingons and the Federation had deteriorated as well. The Klingons had a new, larger, much more powerful class of attack cruiser in service.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard married Dr. Beverly Crusher, but they later divorced, though Beverly chose to keep the Picard family name. Picard resigned from Starfleet in 2370 to become a Federation ambassador. He finally retired in 2386 and went to live on his family farm in France. By 2395, Picard had advanced Irumodic Syndrome, a degenerative disorder that causes irreversible damage to the nervous system. Dr. Beverly Picard became the captain of the
USS Pasteur, which was destroyed in 2395 when it was attacked by the Klingons in the Devron System.
Data left Starfleet to become a professor of physics at Cambridge University. Geordi La Forge also left Starfleet, married the former Leah Brahms, moved to Rigel III, and had three children. Geordi, who no longer needed his VISOR to see, became a novelist.

Deanna Troi died unexpectedly in 2375, about five years after the end of TNG's 7th season.Worf never pursued a romantic relationship with Deanna Troi because of William Riker's unspoken disapproval. After Troi's death, Worf and Riker became enemies. Worf served for a time as a member of the Klingon High Council, and by 2395 he was governor of the Klingon colony H'atoria. The USS Enterprise-D was nearly decomissioned by Starfleet in 2390, but Riker, who had became an admiral by then, took a personal interest in his old ship, ordered it upgraded, and took personal command of the ship. By 2395, the USS Enterprise-D boasted of a third warp nacelle, enhanced firepower, and a cloaking device.

Starfleet had recalibrated the warp scale for some reason, so in 2395, it was not uncommon for a starship to be travelling at warp 13. Both the
USS Enteprise-D and USS Pasteur travelled at warp 13 in the episode. Some Federation starships are apparently equipped with the cloaking device since Worf suggested that Riker could have provided Picard with such a starship for his mission.

Some of the above future events show possible directions for the future of Star Trek's timeline as certain elements have already come to pass. For example, the new, large Klingon attack cruiser encountered by the USS Pasteur had entered into the service of the Empire by 2372. It is the Negh'Var class attack cruiser. ("The Way of the Warrior" [DS9]). By 2373, Geordi has already undergone surgery to replace his VISOR (Star Trek First Contact). The recalibration of the warp scale could possibly allude to some some kind of implementation of the transwarp drive. Advances in transwarp development had been made with the breaking of the warp 10 barrier by the USS Voyager Shuttlecraft Cochrane in 2372. ("Threshold" [VOY]). Unfortunately, transwarp velocity was shown to have extremely dangerous effects on living beings, and these problems apparently remains to be overcome as of 2379.

By 2375, Worf accepted an appointment as Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire, presumably marking his further involvement in Klingon politics.
("What You Leave Behind" [DS9]). However by 2379, Worf had returned to Starfleet, serving as tactical officer onboard the USS Enterprise-E. By 2379, Riker has been promoted to captain of the USS Titan, probably the first step towards an eventual admiralcy. Riker has also married Deanna Troi, who joins him aboard the USS Titan. (Star Trek Nemesis).

On the other hand, the
USS Enterprise-D was destroyed in 2371 (Star Trek Generations), suggesting that at least some things will be different from the future timeline glimpsed by Picard. Also, Data was apparently killed in 2379 (Star Trek Nemesis), Deanna Troi remains alive, and Picard is still a captain, probably having taken the advice of Captain Kirk, not to allow himself to be taken away from the command of a starship.
Two elements of the above possible future are of particular interest. They are the future Starfleet insignia (c. 2395), and future Starfleet uniforms (c. 2395). These two elements have made appearances in the alternate futures presented in several other episodes, of which I will discuss below.

DS9: "The Visitor" (occurred in 2372, DS9 Season 4)
In 2372, Benjamin Sisko apparently died in a warp core accident onboard the USS Defiant. It was later revealed that the accident had created a subspace link between Sisko and his son Jake, which periodically draws Sisko in and out of subspace. Sisko later manages to return in time and prevent the accident from happening, with help from a future Jake. In preventing the accident, Sisko excised the future in which he died in 2372 from existence. Here, I shall discuss about the various elements that have presented themselves in this alternate future.

In this future, the Federation abandoned station Deep Space 9 to Klingon control in 2373, while Bajor had entered into a mutual defense pact with Cardassia against the Klingons. Jake Sisko grew up to become a successful author and married a Bajoran woman, Korena, in 2384. After Benjamin Sisko reappeared again in 2391, Jake resolved himself to rescue his father from subspace. He abandoned his writing career and studied subspace mechanics, and his marriage with Korena fell apart.
Nog became a commander in Starfleet by 2391, and a captain by 2405. By 2391, Quark had left Deep Space 9 for a moon of his own, and Morn took over Quark's bar and continued to run it as late as 2405. Jadzia Dax and Julian Bashir have attained the ranks of commander by 2405, and Bashir had a family and children.

Jake Sisko attempted a rescue mission in 2405. Capt. Nog managed to obtain the
USS Defiant for the mission. The USS Defiant had already been decomissioned by then. Worf has also managed to get permission from the Klingon High Council for the mission. The rescue attempt ultimately failed. At a later time, when Jake was an old man, he finally succeeds to return Ben Sisko to the time of the accident by ending his own life.
Commander Nog in 2391.
Captain Nog in 2405. Bashir and Jadzia Dax in 2405.
During the 2391 sequence, Nog was wearing the TNG Starfleet uniform (2366-2372) with the 2371 Starfleet insignia. Interestingly, the Starfleet uniforms with grey shoulders had already been introduced by 2373 (Star Trek First Contact). The reason why Nog was wearing the TNG Starfleet uniform is because Star Trek First Contact hasn't happened yet by the time of this episode.
During the 2405 sequence, the crew were wearing the future Starfleet uniforms (c. 2395) with the future Starfleet insignia (c. 2395) as seen in "All Good Things..." (TNG). Presumably, Starfleet had adopted the uniforms and insignia sometime between 2391 and 2405.

From the alternate futures as seen in both
"All Good Things..." (TNG) and "The Visitor" (DS9), we can see that relations between the Klingon Empire and the Federation had deteriorated quite significantly. We can also see that Worf may take a further involvement in Klingon politics and quite possibly become a member of the Klingon High Council itself. This is also suggested by "Firstborn" (TNG).

Nog had enrolled into Starfleet Academy in 2372
("Little Green Men" [DS9]). He became an ensign through a battlefield comission during the Dominion War in 2374 ("Favor the Bold" [DS9]), and was promoted to lieutenant in 2375 ("What You Leave Behind" [DS9]). There is no doubt that Nog will continue to rise through the ranks.

Unfortunately, Jadzia Dax was killed in 2374
("Tears of the Prophets" [DS9]), meaning that at least this element will not come to pass.

VOY: "Future's End" (occurred in 2373, VOY Season 3)
In this episode, a Capt. Braxton from the 29th century travelled back in time to 2373 in an attempt to destroy the
USS Voyager, which he believed would be responsible for a temporal explosion that would destroy Earth's solar system in the 29th century. Piloting the Federation timeship Aeon, Braxton attacked the USS Voyager, but his attempt resulted in his ship being thrown back in time, where it crashed landed on Earth in 1967. Braxton survived the crash, but was separated from his ship. Meanwhile, a man called Henry Starling salvaged the Aeon and exploited its technology over the next three decades.

The
Aeon's attack on the USS Voyager had also caused the Voyager to be thrown back in time, but the Voyager reemerged into the year 1996. After Janeway learned that Starling intended to use the timeship to travel into the future to steal technology, she ordered the Voyager to destroy the timeship. This action prevented the 29th century temporal explosion, and created an alternate future in which Braxton was not trapped in the 20th century. This Braxton escorted Voyager back to the Delta Quadrant in 2373.
From this episode, we learn that by the 29th century, the Federation operated timeships that apparently explored time in the same way that starships explored space.

The episode also suggests that our present-day microcomputer revolution had its origins in some future technology that was exploited by an unscrupulous 20th-century entrepeneur.

Captain Braxton from the 29th century. Federation timeship Aeon from the 29th century.
The episode seemed to suggest that the original Braxton, along with all the technological changes wrought by Starling, disappeared when Voyager destroyed the Aeon in 1996. However, the holographic doctor's mobile holo-emitter did not disappear, suggesting that some effects of Braxton's 1967 crash remained. Also, the stranded Braxton makes a return appearance in 2375 ("Relativity" [VOY]), marking another element that continued to exist.

Here are two elements of the future that are of particular interest: the 29th century Starfleet insignia, and the 29th century Starfleet uniforms.
