My Star Trek Games, Part 3
Star Trek Invasion, for PS1 (2000)
The Borg are fighting their way through the Klingon Empire, heading towards Federation space. Lt. Cmdr. Worf of the
USS Enterprise-E has been assigned to the USS Typhon to train a group of pilots for the Valkyrie-class space fighters such as to deal with the expected battle with the Borg, and you are one of the rookie pilots. Test your flying skills as you are pitched against formidable adversaries such as the Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, Kam'Jahtae (?), and of course, the Borg (now how the hell are you supposed to do that?!!)
Star Trek Armada (2000)
In this strategy game, you take on the roles of the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, and Borg, as the Borg try to assimilate Earth once again, this time using the power of the Omega molecule.
Star Trek Armada II (2001)
In this sequel to
Star Trek Armada, the Cardassians and Species 8472 join in the battle, supposedly to launch a preemptive strike on the Borg in the Delta Quadrant.
Star Trek Away Team (2001)
You lead a group of elite Starfleet commandos who are sent to special missions in many places around the galaxy, and your group are based from a prototype starship, the
USS Incursion, which is equipped with holographic technology and allows the crew to infiltrate into enemy territory.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Dominion Wars (2001)
The Dominion is fed up with Federation incursions into the Gamma Quadrant and has sent an armada of Jem'Hadar warships through the Bajoran wormhole to wipe out the Federation once and for all. The Federation and the Klingon Empire has allied together to counter this threat to the Alpha Quadrant, while the Dominion has found a fast ally in the Cardassians. Now, take either side of this conflict and fight to the bitter end.
Star Trek Bridge Commander (2002)
You are the First Officer onboard the
USS Dauntless when a star mysteriously goes supernova, resulting in the death of your captain while he was out in a shuttlecraft. You are now in command of the starship as you attempt to complete your mission, and at the same time familiarising yourself with the bridge functions.
Star Trek Starfleet Command III (2002)
In this game set in the
TNG era after the Dominion Wars, the Federation and the Klingons have built a space station near the Neutral Zone which could detect cloaked ships within the zone. I don't know much else about this game since I couldn't even play it, the game just keeps crashing after the introduction.
Star Trek Elite Force II (2003)
The
USS Voyager has returned to the Alpha Quadrant, and members of the Hazard Team, the group of special forces formed on Voyager, has been reassigned to different duties around Starfleet. But now, an unknown force is striking at the very heart of the Federation, and the Hazard Team has been reassembled aboard the USS Enterprise-E in an effort to deal with this threat. I hope the above description is sufficiently accurate, since both my laptop and PC lack the required graphic card for me to run the game and therefore I haven't even playied the game yet.
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Interactive Technical Manual (1994)
Not exactly a game, but a Star Trek software nevertheless. This interactive technical manual is based on the book ST:TNG Technical Manual, and in this software, you could move around the Enterprise-D to various locations such as the bridge or main engineering, and take a closer look at various objects.
Star Trek Omnipedia (1995)
An omnipedia on the Star Trek universe, well almost, since this edition contains information on the entire TOS and TNG, and only up till Season 1 of DS9, and almost nothing on VOY. There is now a Version 3.0 which contains information up till the entire DS9, Star Trek Insurrection, and only up till Season 5 of VOY. I have given up buying newer editions of the Omnipedia (now referred to as Encyclopedia) as there is aways some new information that's going to be created, especially since the series ENT is still going on.
As you may have observed, there are some games that I do not have, either because I am not interested in them, or because I have yet to come across them at all. Here's a list of Star Trek games that I do not have.

- Star Trek Generations - Beyond the Nexus, for Gameboy (1994)
- Star Trek: The Next Generation - Echoes from the Past, for SNES/Sega Genesis (1994)
- Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past, for SNES/Sega Genesis (1995)
- Star Trek Starfleet Academy Starship Bridge Simulator, for SNES/Sega 32X (1995)
- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Crossroads of Time, for SNES/Sega Genesis (1995)
- Star Trek - The Game Show (1997)
- Star Trek Captain's Chair (1998)

- Star Trek Starfleet Command (1999)
-
Star Trek Starfleet Command Volume II: Empires at War (2000)
-
Star Trek ConQuest Online (2000)
- Star Trek Starship Creator - Warp 2 (2000)

-
Star Trek Starfleet Command 2 Expansion: Orion Pirates (2001)
- Star Trek Shattered Universe, for PS2/Xbox (2003)

The Star Trek Starfleet Command series are based on a role-playing game of the same name, but I am not particularly interested in these strategy games since they require much planning to play. Star Trek ConQuest Online is an online game, in which you act as a Q and control the people and empires you create as you compete with other Qs online. The idea of playing with other people online does not appeal to me, and besides, the ConQuest website no longer provide any support for the players. Unfortunately, I have never had the SNES, Sega Genesis platforms, and therefore never played the games which ran on those platforms, let alone come across them, although I entertain the thought that one day, I may buy the PS2 or Xbox, not only to play future Star Trek games, but other games as well.

There are some Star Trek games that are known to have been in development but have been cancelled due to numerous reasons. I would be creating a new page to give more details on these 'lost' games, but for now, here are some known examples.

A
TOS game titled Secret of Vulcan Fury was said to be in development by Interplay and was set for release in 1997, later delayed to 1998. The game would have featured 3D animation of TOS characters and voice-over by the original actors and actresses. The story supposedly involves a Romulan plot to attack either Vulcan or the Federation, using an ancient weapon. Unfortunately, even after two trailers had been released and pre-launch orders were taken, the game was cancelled for no apparent reason.

Spectrum Holobyte was said to have secured the license to produce a
TNG game Star Trek: First Contact, to based on the movie of the same name. However, no word about it has ever been heard of since, even though another game, Star Trek: Hidden Evil, which was based on the following movie (Star Trek: Insurrection) has already been released. The game would have recreated the battle on the Enterprise-E during ST:FC as the Starfleet crew struggled for control of the ship against the Borg, and it features an encounter with the Borg Queen.

A
VOY game, rumoured to be titled Star Trek: Voyager - Retribution, was also known to be in development by Looking Glass Technologies, and it was featured in the magazine PC Gamer Vol. 3, No. 9 (Sept. 1996). The storyline supposedly involves Voyager's crew beaming down to a planet in search of food, and several crew members get kidnapped by the Kazons. The search for the missing crew leads Voyager to an abandoned planet occupied by a computer system. After hacking into the computer, the crew still remain clueless as to the Kazons' motives and their missing crew members' location, but they learn of several other new aliens who will join in the story. As far as I know, no such VOY game was ever released. The first VOY game released was Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force (2000), and it bears no resemblence to the above story. I suspect that the untitled VOY game got cancelled when the Kazons were written out of VOY in season 3, and therefore it made no sense to release a VOY game based on the Kazons anymore.

Activision was producing a strategy game called
Star Trek Borg Assimilator in which, you lead the Borg Collective in 12 campaign missions with the ultimate goal of assimilating the entire Alpha Quadrant. Interestingly, you do not take the role of the Borg Queen, who instead acts as your advisor and provides you with information to assimilate other worlds. However, the game was apparently cancelled when Activision felt that the game strayed away from the spirit of Star Trek, although many fans would disagree and were actually looking forward to it.

An expansion pack for
ST:TNG - Birth of the Federation was announced, but all word about it seem to have disappeared.

Another strategy game called
Star Trek Universal Evolution had also become cancelled while still in development. The game was said to be a sequel to ST:TNG - Birth of the Federation. While ST:TNG - BotF was based in the TNG era, Star Trek Universal Evolution would now cover all 4 eras of Star Trek and its movies (TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY, apparently not including ENT), quite a massive project considering all the starship and planet models that have to be rendered. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), the game now appears to be cancelled for good, and there were rumours that the development team was swamped with numerous contractual disagreements, which resulted in the cancellation of the game.
