DOPPELGANGER: THE EVIL WITHIN Schwing! Schwing!
Mmmm...not just one Drew Barrymore, but two! That girl's so hot, stuff in my apartment kept catching fire.
I didn't expect much from this one, outside of the obvious charm of Ms. Barrymore (you guys know I love y'all to death, but at the risk of sounding like a nutjob, I'd kill every one of you and your families and friends and pets for a shot at her), it just screams out "Straight to video", which isn't necessarily bad but usually is.
But I was pleasantly surprised. On top of Drew x 2, we're given a twisty plot, a weird, "What the hell?"-inducing conclusion (which is a good thing here, strangely), and two more terrific performances. One is by George Newburn, an actor who looks/acts/sounds like about five people everybody out there knows, so all of his roles become almost instantly sympathetic without him really having to try at all. Another is Leslie Hope, who is nothing short of wonderful as Newburn's acidic writing partner.
Without giving away too much, suffice it to say that the plot involves Drew Barrymore knocking off most of her family one at a time...but is it, or is it not Drew-as-Holly, that sweet girl who moves in with Newburn? Or maybe there's some sort of........could it be......a DOPPELGANGER?!?!?!?!?
Best line: "I'm a slut, you're a slut. Who wants coffee?"
Check it out, Drew fans. As for you Drew non-fans, what's wrong with you? Yeesh, go see a shrink or something. |
