LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH Good movie, bad ending, awful title
Overall, this is a good, creepy movie. The box art gave me the willies as a kid, and only now do I get around to watching the film. But there is the matter of the film's refusal to explain anything...AT ALL.
I mean, in a short story, or a short film, answers aren't really necessary. Even in a full-length film or novel, to have questions at the end is nice, if they're the right questions, especially in a horror story. Here, I'm not just talking about a few questions, I'm talking about "What the hell is going on? Who are they? Why did she do that? What? The? Hell?" So, I'm trying to get over that.
In the meantime, LSJTD is a quiet, creepy horror flick about a young lady who hears voices in her head. This is handled extraordinarily well, I might add. This kind of thing can easily be screwed up, but between the voices in her head - most of which are direct voicings of her thoughts - and an excellent performance from Zohra Lampert, we're given Jessica as a well fleshed-out character, with more nuance and personality than we're likely to see in any twenty horror movies.
Awful title, though. |
