SCREAM FOR HELP Lightweight, but a lot of fun
This one opens with 17-year-old Christine explaining to us, in voiceover, that she believes that her stepfather is trying to kill her mother, and now he wants to kill her too...but nobody believes her. The movie then proceeds, in flashback, to show just what led her to this conclusion. It needn't even be pointed out that yes, like Dr. Evil to his son, this guy is trying to kill them. You'd just think that he wouldn't try SO MANY times in such a short span of time, and that he'd pick methods that wouldn't so easily be seen as murder. Ah, well.
This is a pretty absurd little movie anyway, and it's more fun to allow for that in this one. Written by Tom Holland, it's directed by the guy who did all those Death Wish movies (for sheer laughs, Death Wish 3 is hard to beat, and you get to see Marina Sirtis topless to boot). There's lots of sex and hot naked women in this one, so I'm certainly not complaining. It even has Christine reclining on her bed wearing a shirt that says "MUFFS" across her breasts. I don't care what that means. I like it.
There's some good car action here too (one "runaway car" scene which is fun, and so is one hilarious shot of an obvious dummy being hit by a car). Lots of over-the-top, no-subtlety-at-all 70's-style music by John Paul Jones. Yes, THAT John Paul Jones.
It all builds up to a nicely absurd and drawn-out climax with very little regard for plausibility, and I have to admit that between some admittedly suspenseful scenes (I love those moments where you almost cry out "Augh! You fucked up! You're gonna die, girl!") and the overall silliness of the affair, I was won over. Have a look if you're in the mood for something lightweight. |
