SPOOKIES Almost as bad as its title, but nothing could be THAT bad
I've read that this is really two movies, possibly uncompleted, joined together to make one release. It sure does have the feeling of disjointedness that would arise from just such a genesis - there's basically two plots, neither of which have anything to do with each other. It would also explain why there's no fewer than three directors credited here. Between all this and the title, you can see why I've left it third from last.
A bunch of people find themselves trapped in a rural mansion, and beset by zombies, monsters, gremlins, and an entirely too mobile statue of Death. Meanwhile, a ghoulish old man awakens his bride-to-be from an ancient slumber, although she wishes she'd stayed in bed. (so did I)
This is probably the only movie you're likely to see with farting mud-zombies that are soluble in wine. Maybe that's why it won "the Delirium Award" which it proudly proclaims on the box. I can only assume that one is given the Delirium Award for great achievement in suck.
If you fall in to an open grave, and the guy who's been chasing you starts shoveling dirt on you, whaddya do: do you writhe around because dirt is gross, brushing it off of your face and clothes...or do you TRY TO GET OUT OF THE HOLE? Well, guess what. That's right. Yes, when some folks are buried alive, they deserve it.
I was also amused by the moment when one villain is pushed off the roof and explodes when he hits the ground, like a car in an action movie. The thing is, the shot of the explosion clearly shows it exploding in the middle of an open space, when you'd think he'd be right next to the house he was pushed off of.
Sure, there are some very cool creature effects here (especially when one chick turns into a giant spider thing) and some nifty moments (like when one girl's face dissolves), but the title alone should give you a good indication of the level of quality to be expected from this thing.
Stay away. Also known as Twisted Souls, or at least one of the movies that comprised this is. |
