TRUTH OR DARE: A CRITICAL MADNESS I DARE YOU to watch this movie and not crack up
No, this isn't the Madonna ego-stroke. This is the zero- budget, extremely goofy supposed horror flick about an unbalanced man who plays truth or dare (with...whoever) and takes it just a bit too seriously.
And I have to confess, I laughed my ass off in the first half. On top of the lead actor's marvellous performance ("I dare you to cut your chest open!" "ALL RIGHT!!! I WILL!!!"), we even get moments that foreshadow "Dental plan!" "Lisa needs braces!" "Dental plan!" "Lisa needs braces!", not to mention the ToD games themselves, which are pretty damn funny.
That's about it for the plot. Dude comes home one day and finds his wife shagging her boss. He takes refuge in ToD games and goes in and out of Sunnyville Mental Institution (and the subtitle marches across the screen EVERY SINGLE TIME there's a scene there, and there's at least four), which he somehow manages to smuggle two knives and a hand grenade into.
The editing's terrible, the gore effects are cheap and the music is beyond awful (the closing song, "A Critical Madness", ranks with "Big Trouble In Little China" as worst song ever played over the closing credits of a film). The budget seems to be only marginally higher than that for Redneck Zombies...but this one's got something RZ didn't...funny moments, and quite a few of them.
The second half is bogged down substantially by the fact that our, uh, hero has ripped his tongue out, and can no longer overact outrageously for us. (I mean it - he was really something special in this flick. Too bad his only other acting credit is one episode of CHEERS.) On top of that, he wears a copper mask and we can't even see his wild-eyed maniac glare. But we do get a number of fun moments, not the least of which is a drive-by chainsaw attack.
What a goofy little movie. I would've liked to have seen more ToD games, though. Could you imagine "I dare you to cut off your own testicles and shove them up your own rectum!" "ALL RIGHT!!! I WILL!!!" |
