VOODOO DAWN I've got good news, and bad news
The good news: it's got Gina Gershon. The bad news: she doesn't make out with a chick. (cue the chorus of "So what's the point?") (hell, I'll chime in on that one)
I can't say that the whole "voodoo" thing is something I much enjoy in horror movies; only one or two of 'em ever worked for me anyway. (I do admit, however, to enjoying the very small rash of "Jamaican voodoo drug posse" movies circa 1990) And the tradition continues; Voodoo Dawn actually being just a slasher flick in voodoo trappings.
Tony Todd - who doesn't get any lines - plays Makoute, an evil Voodoo priest who's going around, killing people, taking pieces of them to assemble a Frankenstein-like thrall. The only things stopping him are Gershon (sporting a really lousy southern drawl), stoic-intellectual-white-guy, wacky-comic-relief-black-guy, and a coalition of good Voodoo practitioners.
Pretty lame. I can't even tell if the final shot - of a zombiefied man unable to leave a room in an abandoned house because he's been impaled sideways with a spear - is supposed to be funny, scary, or sad.
At least there's a nifty monster at the end, even though it turns out to be a big wimp. Watch this one only if you're a die-hard Gershon or Todd completist. |
