Okeydoke, this is a place where I get to talk about movies I've seen! Sorta reviewing and sorta just rambling. Mostly rambling. :) *************** Veggie Tales: Just got back from this movie. I liked it a lot. Of course, I like Veggie Tales, so that might explain it. :) Anyway, it's fun, very cute, and of course has nothing objectionable in it, so it's safe to take kids to. And there were certainly kids there... They weren't too noisy though. In fact, I think the adults there laughed more than the kids! If you don't know, it's the story of Jonah from the Bible. (It brought back memories of the Jonah musical I participated in at my church when I was little.) It's got more of a plot than XXX, that's for sure. And more fun too. And a heck of a lot cuter. XXX: Well, I'm sorta cheating here. I really should have written this right after I saw the movie and it's been about a week now, but I think I can still rant about it. In short: don't see this movie. One of the stupidest, most pointless movies ever made. I normally like action/adventure/secret agent type movies ("guy movies" I guess you could call them), but this one I really really did not like. There was no plot. Or as little as the filmmakers could get away with. It was a vehicle for explosions, Vin Diesel's' attitude, and scantily clad women. There wasn't even a decent car chase. I wasn't quite as bored in this movie as I was in Mission to Mars, but it was close. With no plot, it just couldn't keep my attention. I know with these types of movies, you're supposed to turn your brain off to enjoy them, but even that didn't help. My recommendation: save the cash and go rent a Farscape DVD so you can see that action/adventure/plot can actually be done. Crocodile Hunter:Collison Course: If you're a Croc Hunter fan, you just have to see this movie. It's fiction, but the parts with Steve and Terri are like one of their regular shows. Those parts aren't even in widescreen (which sorta bugged me a little, but I guess they were trying to make it seem like a regular show. Anyway, I got used to it). They're driving around, rescuing critters, and doing what they normally do, and just as in the shows on Animal Planet, Steve talks directly to the camera, so most of those parts feel just like a show. The other part of the movie is that some sort of top secret US gov't satellite has crashed in the Australian outback and been swallowed by a crocodile. Except the CIA agents sent to retrieve it don't know that it's been swallowed. The problem is further compounded by the fact that said crocodile resides on the property of a rather ill-tempered cattle rancher who keeps trying to shoot it, and you can guess who's called in to capture and relocate the croc. Anyway, I won't describe the entire plot, but it's a funny, light-hearted movie, a nice hour-and-a-half diversion. Of course I immensly enjoyed the fact that two actors in the movie have been on Farscape. Magda Szubanski (Furlow in Farscape) is the cattle rancher (did a wonderful job too) and my favorite PK toady, Captain Braca, er, David Franklin, had a small part as an unnamed CIA agent. He had lines though!! Tried to cover his Aussie accent but it snuck through a little. <g> Anyway, fun movie, go see it, better than MIB II. Men In Black II: Saw it almost a week ago, so I don't remember too many specific things, but I didn't like it as much as the first one. In the first one the humor seemed more spontanious, and just plain funnier. Also, the plot was very much the same as the first one: two agents trying to find a mysterious object before a big bad alien destroys the world. Not original anymore. Of course, it isn't meant to be some great masterpiece, just a summer blockbuster to see and forget about. I'd advise going to a matinee so you don't waste $9. Lilo & Stitch: Saw this one a couple of weeks ago, but I really liked it. Certainly better than some other recent Disney offerings (excepting last year's Atlantis, that was good too). And of course being a sci fi geek I was jazzed about it having a little sci fi in it too. :) Like Atlantis, this is more an action/adventure movie than the standard Disney fairy tale, so it's got a little more in it for the older crowd. Personally, I think Stitch is adorable, especially when he's pretending to be a dog (loved the funny animal shelter scene, BTW). It's got some great action in it, but it's also very touching, especially at the end. I'll embarrass my sister here and say that this was the only Disney movie she ever cried at. :D All in all, a good movie; I'd recommend it. If I had some spare cash lying around I might just go see it again. |
