Join UNIT, your planet needs YOU!
Earth: 1999. It is now two years since the last notable alien incursion on planet Earth, when a band of futuristic Arthurian knights attempted to cause Armageddon [Battlefield]. A new plague, called Virus Kappa, is reaching epidemic proportions in the equatorial regions and is spreading outwards. Millions are dying every month. To combat it, the WHO (World Health Organisation) has had a great deal of UNIT's resources re-allocated to it. As a result of this, UNIT is now operation at a reduced capacity it has not seen since the 1970s [i.e. the Pertwee era]. But when UNIT's Scientific Advisor is asked to work for the WHO, the question has to be asked: could the virus be extraterrestrial in origin?
Also, where did that vanishing train go? And, who or what was responsible for decapitating all those golfers?
These questions need answers.
UNIT needs YOU to answer them!
Pre-credits sequence
Carnoustie, Monday 6th September 1999, 2.30pm
A golf course alongside a railway line.
Two men, golfers, about to tee off; Hamish and Dougal.
Hamish swings back and hits the ball high into the air.
Clang!
The ball drops from the sky and the metallic noise of impact reverberates back down the fairway. The ball did not appear to hit anything.
Hamish looks at Dougal in astonishment, but his surprise increases considerably when Dougal’s head is suddenly parted cleanly from his shoulders. Of course, Hamish barely has time to register his surprise before he too is decapitated.
It is not long before other golfers notice what has happened. They meet the same fate.
The Flying Scotsman passes slowly by, travelling between Arbroath and Dundee. Its passengers and crew are offered a clear view of the massacre out the left-hand windows. The driver, blissfully unaware, does not stop or even slow the train.
Cut to Dundee Train Station, where passengers are waiting, bored, on platform 1. The PA announces:
“We apologise for the late arrival of the 1445 to London King’s Cross. We’re not quite sure what has happened to it, but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out… what’s going on.”
Roll credits.
