The New Star: Interlude 14

Excerpts from “The Broken-Winged Crane”

The First Summoning

This tale concerns the darkest of times for the Gods and their Chosen, when it seemed as if they could not win their Great War without the very fabric of the world being destroyed along with their opponents, the seemingly almighty Titans. The dilemma was this; if the Primordial beings were to be slain, their part of the cosmos would cease forever. One of their number made up the Wall of Creation, separating that which is of Order from the Wyld, that which is of Chaos.

And lo, it came to pass that the First Sorcerer performed the original act of that which is termed summoning, calling upon That-Which-Is-Life-And-Death to come unto her and binding Him within a circle of elemental fire. She was the first to know that all things born of Order may so be bound if one has the strength. The First Sorcerer had the power to summon the Avatar of Life, but knew this act would ne’er be repeated for none would ever possess such might again. It was then that the bargain was struck, that would save Creation from the ruin of Chaos. The First dealt with Life, and in exchange for the freedom of the five Children of Order, Life swore that the fall of the Wall would not bring in the Wyld. He gave unto the First the knowledge of containment, and victory was now enabled for the Gods and the Exalted.

Betrayed by Life, the slain Primordials refused to be subject to Him and chose, as was their prerogative as beings not born of Order, neither life nor death. They became the Malfeans, and no more may be spoken of them.

The Children of Order

The Children of Order are named thus: Life; Light; Shape; Time; Truth. They are the avatars of those things that are not possessed by the Wyld. Each embodies both itself and its own opposite: Life and Death; Light and Dark; Shape and Insubstantiality; Time and Timelessness (by some called Nothingness); Truth and Falsehood.
We shall ne’er be rid of them, for they are in everything that Is, everything that Was, and everything that Yet Will Be. We should ne’er be free of them, except in Chaos. And then, we should never be free.

The First Sorcerer

Know then the name of the First Sorcerer, she who is spoken of in these tales, whose legacy echoes through the ages.
I am the First Sorcerer, and my name is Brigid.
