AJMAN POSTAL HISTORY

 

 

On October 15th, 1963, Baroody Stamp Co. Ltd. in Beirut announced that the ruler of Fujeirah, Umm al Qiwain, and Ajman will open there Independent post offices as follows: Fujeirah as from the 22nd November 1963, Umm al Qiwain as from the 27th November 1963, and Ajman as from the 29th November 1963. Also announced that ordinary and registered, sea-mail and airmail correspondence will be accepted and delivered as a starting service.

 

Ajman opened its post office on November 29, 1963, and issued its first set on June 20, 1964. Before issuing the first set, mail from Ajman were sent to Dubai in bundles for dispatch. The Ajman post office established after a postal agreement between the ruler of Ajman Shaikh Rashid Bin Humaid Al Na’imi and the Baroody Stamp Co. of Beirut signed on September 29th, 1963.

 

Some main points that the agreement stated:

 

1. The company undertakes to arrange a post office in Ajman and to arrange postal traffic to all parts of the world within two months from the date of the signing of this contract. 2. The company undertakes to arrange all necessary publicity for the stamps of Ajman including the printing of brochures and the distribution of cultural and publicity pamphlets free to all parts of the world and the introduction of the State of Ajman to philatelists and in international circles such as United Nations, U.N.E.S.C.O., etc. 3. The company undertakes to prepare all necessary designs for the printing of stamps and to seek the Government’s approval before printing them. 4. The company undertakes to print stamps for local consumption and for philatelists in the outside world in the necessary quantities and with the approval of the Government.

 

On July 5th, 1966, Ajman opened a post office in its Manama dependency, offering full local and international mail service. The first Manama issue was the first Ajman definitive and commemoratives overprinted “MANAMA” in both Arabic and English, and with the denominations surcharged to reflect the newly adopted Qatar/Dubai currency “Dirhams” & “Riyals”.

 

In its first announcement Manama post office states that the overprinted stamps are solely for postal use and post office sale and that there will be no philatelic sale and also no philatelic mail orders will be accepted!
