The Old Palace in a Philatelic View
The Old Palace cancel, was introduced on April 1st, 1968. The Old Palace was pictured on the first issue of Abu Dhabi (only 1r, and 2r), which issued on March 30th, 1964. The same set reissued on October 1st, 1966, with Shakhbut's portrait defaced by four horizontal bars (three bars on the low values), and the whole series was surcharged in fils and dinars. On April 1st, 1967 the first independent definitive issued, and only the high values 500f and 1d were pictured the old palace. An aerogramme issued on January 2, 1968, showing the Old Palace and Shaikh Zaid. The cancel that portrays the Old Abu Dhabi Palace (Type 7) was placed on April 1st, 1968. It was only in use for a few months before it was damaged while being used as a hammer. Meanwhile, Palace cancel was used in aerogrammes in red and black. The same cancel used as First Day Cover cancel on the second anniversary issue of Shaikh Zaid’s accession on August 6th, 1968. The last known use of this cancel is November 25th, 1968.

1967 (1 April). Perf 13x13˝. First independent definitive issue, only the high values 500f and 1d pictured the old palace. This example shows a stamp with the Old Palace picture and at the same time tied with Old Palace cancel!
