INDEPENDENT POSTAL ADMINISTRATION

Nine types of
cancels are recorded used in Sharjah during the independent postal
administration, and almost all types are used in two different colors, black or
magenta ink. Six of these types were inscribed “SHARJAH & DCIES”
in Arabic and English, two inscribed “SHARJAH - KHOR FAKKAN”, also in
Arabic and English, and one inscribed “POSTAGE PAID” in English only.
The double-bridged circle cancel
“Type 1”, which was the first Sharjah cancel, was introduced on July 10th,
1963, when Sharjah post office was opened. The cancel inscribed “SHARJAH
& Dcies. / T.S” in Arabic and English. The “T.S” under the
date line stand for “Trucial States”. The cancel is 30mm in
diameter. The large double
circle cancel “Type 2”, was introduced during the year 1964. The
cancel is a copy of “Type 1” but without the bridged lines between the
date line its size is bigger than the first type, which is 35mm in diameter.
The cancel inscribed “SHARJAH & Dcies. / T.S” in Arabic and
English. During the year 1966, the small
double circle cancel with a star above the date “Type 3” was
introduced. The cancel inscribed “SHARJAH & DCIES” in Arabic and
English, and 27mm in diameter in size. The cancel was known used during the
UAE postal administration and the latest known date is December 1976. Another type of the small double
circle cancel with a star above the date “Type 4” was introduced

difference is the Arabic font type. The cancel inscribed “SHARJAH &

of the small double circle cancel “Type 4” have been recorded used
without neither the star above the date nor the year under the day-month line
before it was corrected during the first day of the 1971 year. The first small single circle

postal administration and the latest known date is February 25th,
1973. Also, Type 7 was used in two different colors, magenta and black. The “POSTAGE PAID” cancel
“Type 9” was suggested first by Mr. Bruce Conde, Shaikh Saqr’s postal adviser,
when shortage of the most used values became acute during the year 1963. The
postmaster general Mr. Yousef Salim Tadros felt such procedure would cause a
loss of prestige for Sharjah post office. During 1966, the idea for the “POSTAGE
PAID” cancel arise again, and finally it was introduced during the same
year. Back to the IPA page. Back to SHARJAH page. Back to EPM page. P. O.
