Introduction
On a UPS flight from Moscow, your plane was caught in the Perfect Storm, blown miles off course, and forced to land in the ocean. Fortunately, you were able to swim safely to shore. A few supplies were washed ashore as well.

Unfortunately, in the darkness and confusion, you are separated from your companions.
Upon assessment of your situation, you have no idea where in the world you are. You have no food and only enough water to last three days.

In the short time you have been on the island, it has not rained.

The Task

Your immediate task is to find a source of fresh water, build or find a suitable shelter, find a reliable supply of food, and to find your location to direct a rescue party to you. Once you have the necessities of life established, you will be able to devote time to locating your companions.

As you begin working on the island, you will want to be on the lookout for sources of food.

And don't forget to prepare a stack of wood for a signal fire.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you are a survivor!

You are able to make fresh water from salt water, you have a roof over your head, and you know where in the world you are. Pick up your phone and call search and rescue. However, if you choose to remain on the island a little longer, put a message in the bottle and throw it into the sea.

Here are a few questions to think about for future investigation. Your teacher may have additional questions or research ideas for you too.

  • What determines the type of material people use to build homes and shelters?
  • What problem did early sailors and explorers have to solve in order to accurately locate their longitude?
  • Plan an experiment for large-scale production of fresh water.
  • How can you apply the principles of desalinization to your experiment to increase the amount of fresh water produced?
  • How does increasing the surface area of the solar still effect the amount of fresh water produced?
  • Does the outside temperature effect the production of fresh water?
  • How can you start a fire using sticks or flint and steel?
  • Conduct a study of edible plants in your area.
