Message From the Chairperson In the Spirit of Solidarity,
I would like to personally congratulate United Auto
Workers Local 129 on fifty years of existence.
Considering all the numerous changes that our
country and the economy has faced and endured in
those fifty years, it is obvious that we have been
blessed just to still be standing after all the years.
Since our inception in 1956, millions of marriages
have dissolved, businesses have failed, companies
have gone bankrupt, partnerships have been broken
and even governments have been overturned. In
those fifty years, our country has seen thousand of
changes. We have seen a man land on the moon,
racial wars and barriers overturned, political
awareness, affiliation and participation increase, and
we've even seen a president and great civil rights
activist assassinated, But yet we still stand. We've
dealt with riots, wars, political protests and the hurt of
our soldiers lives lost overseas. This country has
seen the United States grow into the greatest
economical power in the world, but yet has still faced
at times an uncertain economy. But yet we still stand.
Our music has changed, evolved and been
reinvented. This country has faced many health
concerns from heart conditions to cancer to AIDs and
Alzheimer’s.
But yet by the grace of God We still stand.
Even as recent as this year it has been reported that
a foreign automobile manufacturer has overtaken
General Motors as the number one manufacturer in
the United States. Delphi is now threatening strikes
and bankruptcies that could affect all of us, and we
have finally come to appreciate the fact that it is good
to have a union. A union that has been able to
withstand all these adversities and remain strong
through the times, The UAW historically has provided
a very good living for millions of workers while
allowing them to raise families, educate their children,
receive proper health care, and retire comfortably.
Through the last fifty years of these struggles, our
Local has been a proud participant of this great union
and played their part to helping its members to
progress. Sometimes, we, like the country, the
economy, and any other business, seem to fall. But I
want to encourage all of you my brothers and sisters
that there is no shame in falling; the only shame is in
not getting up. I encourage you to help us get up and
stay up together. Let's buy American, support
American and continue to support the union label.
