INFORMATION FOR FREE WOMEN

The information comes from many sources, a great deal of it handed from one FW to Another, origin sometimes unknown, Our sincere thanks to the Original Authors.

There are many quotes in the  Books of John Norman describing the Free Women of Gor. In particular the book  "Nomads of Gor" describe the women this way...

Tuchuk women, unveiled, in their long leather dresses, long hair bound in  braids, tended cooking pots hung on tem-wood tripods over dung fires. These  women were unscarred, but like the bosk themselves, each wore a nose ring.  Nomads p27

The women do not wear veils  as the City FW do.  Instead they wear a fine gold ring which pierces the septum  of the nose. This is thought by the Nomads to greatly enhance their beauty.  (The slave girls wear the ring also, however it would be assumed that it is not  as delicate as that of the FW.) Free Women may also braid their hair. Slaves  may not. In Tuchuk the ring is a sign of the Woman's status in Camp and,  similar to the Free Men with the Courage Scars, a Woman would be expected to be  awarded the Nose Ring before being able to Mate

When FW are portrayed by  use of an avatar online, there are guidelines which dictate how the pictures  should be. The most important of these is that they should be modest. This  means no suggestive avatars, no cleavage or implied sexuality.   No bare legs or  midriffs, no see through tops or stand out nipples.  Any sort of necklace  implies a collar and would not be worn by a FW. No earrings as these are  considered too sexually stimulating for FW - these are also reminiscent of the  ear tagging done by Captors... to be an ear pierced slave is shameful for a  girl........ and most definitely not what a FW would wish to display. Avatars  should be no larger than the site regulations allow which is 350pixels high.

The  piercing of the ears is far more terrible, said Ute.  Nose rings are nothing.  They are even pretty. In the south even the free women of the Wagon Peoples wear  nose rings. She held me more closely.  Even free women in the south, she  insisted,  the free women of the Wagon Peoples, wear nose rings. She kissed me.  Besides, she said,  it may be removed, and no one will ever know that you wore  it. It will not show. Then Ute's eyes clouded with tears. I looked at the tiny  steel rods holding open the wounds in her ears. But only slave girls, she  wept, have their ears pierced. She wept. How can I ever hope to become a Free  Companion, she wept. What man would want a woman with the pierced ears of a  slave girl? Earrings, I  said to her, by Gorean girls, are regarded as the ultimate degradation of a  female, appropriate only in sensual slave girls, brazen, shameless wenches,  pleased that men have forced them to wear them, and be beautiful. Do free women on Gor not wear earrings? asked Alyena. Never, I said. Only slave girls? Only the most degraded of slave girls, I said. Tribesmen of Gor 10 Page 138

Free women,  incidentally, seldom, if ever, bare their shoulders. Doing so is almost like  offering themselves for the collar.  If you would be stripped as a slave, then  be a slave, it is said. Similarly free women on Gor seldom, if ever, wear  earrings, either of the natural or of any other variety, such as the clip  variety. Earrings are regarded as being fit, rather, for slaves, and usually the  lowest of slaves. Nose rings, interestingly, are not regarded in the same light.  They are worn even by some free women, I understand, in the far south, the women  of the Wagon Peoples there, as well as, generally, by the female slaves of such  peoples. Dancer of Gor 22 Page 157 In Tuchuk it is recognised  that FW and slaves do need to "get along"; - in the books, very often T/they were  jealous of the slaves and treated them poorly and We all know that this is  not the case online DON'T WE??

"The  Gorean girl is, even if free, accustomed to slavery; she will perhaps own one or  more slaves herself; she knows that she is weaker than men and what this can  mean; she knows that cities fall and caravans are plundered; she knows she might  even, by a sufficiently bold warrior, be captured in her own quarters and ,  bound and hooded, be carried on tarn back over the walls of her own city.  Moreover, even if she is never enslaved, she is familiar with the duties of  slaves and what is expected of them; if she should be enslaved she will know, on  the whole, what is expected of her, what is permitted her and what is not;  moreover, the Gorean girl is literally educated, fortunately or not, to the  notion that it is of great importance to know how to please men; accordingly,  even girls who will be free companions, and never slaves, learn the preparation  and serving of exotic dishes, the art of walking and standing and being  beautiful, the care of a man's equipment, the love dances of their city and so  on...."  Nomads of Gor: the Wintering Chapter page 63

A FW would do well to  remember that a FM regards His Woman and His slaves very differently and the  love He shows for each is quite different.  Having a slave or even several, does  not (and should not) detract from the Love He feels for His Mate.  He will not  tolerate friction in His household indefinitely, so do NOT try His patience to a  point where He reaches for another collar to settle any out of hand dispute.   Remember this is GORand not Earth.  Values here are different -  FW remember their place and although able to offer an opinion should not be seen  to be mouthy, immodest, drunk (in some places even kalana wine is frowned on as  suitable drink for a FW).  Drinking from a bota of paga is certainly  questionable.

The FW has responsibilities  in Camp.  As stated in the Camp Rules, FW are expected to help with the  maintenance of the Camp, including the cooking and cleaning. Even to offer  serve if the slaves are inundated. A serve by a FW can be very beautiful and it  would be expected to be more than a three-liner.. going, getting, giving...  Show Your grace and beauty. You do not have to kneel to offer serve, You are not  a slave, but on return if the Person You are serving is sitting cross legged on  a fur, it might be easier to kneel in Tower to offer the drink/food. Reading  the Ubar Luther scrolls on FW is also interesting.  The Scrolls of Luther on the Wagon Peoples is also good reading, revealing more aspects of FW life, like being able to  read and understand the war signals, drums and lanterns.  Also some information  on the women?s own calendar system.

There is more to FW life on  Gor than being the breeding machine of the FM. Explore the possibility of the  various clans/castes, having read the information supplied on the camp pages and  in the Luther scrolls there should be plenty of opportunities for role play.  Give some consideration to the wagons (as described in the books  on the camp  pages) what would life be like actually living in one. What problems would be  associated with it, what benefits?

BEHAVIOUR (Thank You  Lady Nyx)

It has been said  that anything a FW says in Private Message (PM) is just that, PM, and not to be  brought into the open. Mostly, this was for any sexual encounters, since a FW is  supposed to be demure and modest *S*. Remember whom you are talking to, just  like some jocks like to brag in real time about what a hot time you were, so  too, some will do this on Gor. It?s not up to them to set the limits you will go  to during a sexual encounter, it is up to YOU to set limits, and will ultimately  be your fault if anything nasty ensues. Oh, a word of caution, sometimes you  forget in the middle of a PM conversation to choose the PM!!! Then whatever You  post comes out in public * grimace*

Lambasting a  Rarius in PM is treading on tricky ground. Know whom you are talking to. They  will be only too happy to bring it into the public eye and slap a collar on you,  especially if you are winning the debate. Our words are the projections of our  thoughts. Our thoughts reflect our intelligence. Our intelligence is really the  only weapon Free Women possess on Gor

Free Women are  graceful, witty, charming, demure, modest, intelligent and beautiful. This also  describes slaves (except for demure and modest). Slaves are not allowed to hide  their sexuality, please don?t fault them for that. We cannot act like slaves. No  lap sitting, overt sexual aggressiveness or slutty behaviour.

COUCHING LAWS

If you openly portray yourself in a manner which is  unbecoming of a FW when interacting with a male slave, expect a FM to enslave  you. I wondered what she might look like in a collar. I knew, of course, what she  looked like naked, for I was her silk slave. Free women think as little of  concealing their bodies from their silk slaves as the women of Earth would  before their pet dogs." -Fighting Slave of Gor-, Pg. 180

"Any free woman  who couches with another's slave, or readies herself to couch with another's  slave, becomes herself a slave, and the slave of the slave's master. It is a  clear law. Think of it in this fashion, if you wish. You have given yourself to  Milo, but Milo is mine, and can own nothing, and thus you have given yourself to  me. An analogy is the coin given by a free person to a street girl, which coin,  of course, does not then belong to the girl but to her master. What is given to  the slave is given to the master."-Magicians of Gor-, Pg 7

A Free Woman  can not fur with a male slave she does not own. It does not prevent her  from having sex with a slave she does own. It means  she only has to  prepare to have sex with someone else's slave to be in violation. Actual sex is  not a requirement. Special seduction slaves are used by some owners to trap free  women. Milo, from Magicians of Gor, is a prime example of a seduction slave.  Tarl Cabot uses him to entrap Talena and enslave her by this law.

A proper FW knows how to conduct herself with a male, whether in PM or in  public. There should be no sexual flirting out in the open, no lap sitting, no  heavy petting, no remarks that are sexually teasing. FW should not be making  blatant sexual comments, nor describing a private part of a FW's body to a Male  in the open. FW should not be making challenges of a sexual nature. In short, do  nothing to make You seem like a slave with upper case lettering.

Mannish behaviour is not acceptable. You should not be  trying to take a Mans role. FW do not use rough language, swear, spit, etc. You  should not be behaving like a Man, in speech, dress and posted actions. FW did  NOT ride tarns, they rode in a basket under the tarn, or if captured, over the  pommel of the saddle on her back in front of the one who captured her. When choosing your Caste, just because you are of a  caste that sounds cool and manly, doesn't mean you do not act like a FW anymore. Example: Being a Slaver doesn't give a FW the right to act  like a man and be mouthy. She is STILL a FW. She just has to work more  diligently maintaining her status as a Gorean FW and being true to her  Caste/clan.

Courting should  be done in public, with a chaperone, if You keep to the standard of a demure,  chaste and modest Free Woman of Gor. Believe Me, that is how You want to be  portrayed. Act as a slave, and You may find a ring of steel around Your neck  instead of a ring of gold on Your finger.

What's allowed in  public? Soft glances, warm looks of love, hand holding, walks together, sitting  together, anything that slaves do not do. No lap sitting, passionate kissing,  groping or fondling. 1. The vast majority of women on Gor are free women. Only 2-3% of all women on Gor  are slaves. 2. Free women belong to almost all Castes on Gor except the Initiates, Players  and Assassins. 3. Free women are either born into their caste, free companion into it, or are  promoted into it.

When a woman is  claimed (Mated) or joins with a Free Companion, she has the option to accept the  caste of her mate. But, if she chooses to keep her caste, her children will  still take on the caste of their father. Caste always passes to children through  their father. Some of the Castes that Free Woman may belong to are  Physicians/Healers, Scribes, Merchants and even Warriors The  Role of Women as Physicians Many women do not perform the work of their Caste. One notable exception is the  Physician's Caste. But, a woman cannot practice medicine until she has first  born two children. In many cities, at age fifteen, a woman of the Physician  Caste dons two bracelets. One is removed for each child born, and when both are  removed, she is allowed to practice medicine. Scribes, Merchants, Slavers Women also commonly work as Scribes and Merchants. There are even female  slavers, though not many. Warrior Women may become members of the Warrior's Caste by birth or marriage. Yet, women  are never trained by the Caste to become warriors. There is no instance in any  of the Gorean novels where a woman was ever trained as a warrior in the  Warrior's Caste. FREE WOMEN AND THE SERVING OF  REFRESHMENTS

Free Women do serve the FM and Guests of their home when the slaves of that home  are either unavailable or occupied. The method is to serve the required  refreshment in a pleasant manner and as a FW, not as a slave might serve a Free  Man. (i.e. the slave being particularly descriptive of her body's movements and  postures).

To my surprise  Lara removed her cloak and took the pot of Kal-da from one of the girls and  began to serve the men. Some of the girls looked at her in gratitude for  she was free and in doing this she showed them that she did not regard herself  as above them. That, I said to Kron, pointing out Lara, is  the Tatrix of  Tharna. As Andreas looked upon her he said softly, She is truly a Tatrix. Outlaw of  Gor, page 226

Drawing steel on a Free Man Acting like a slave Public sexual demonstrations Verbally abusing a FM Slapping, striking or hitting a FM Being obnoxious, mouthy and argumentative Normally, in most  of Gor, a FW who has acted up will be caged, may be gagged and returned to Her  homestone to await the displeasure of Her Leader and Brothers. Be honourable  here. If You were in the wrong, accept Your punishment and learn from it. It's  not the mistakes one makes that dictates honour, but what you learn from those  mistakes.

Challenging to be a Free Woman of Gor? Yes, but there is fun to be  had in role play for a FW, We just have to look for it and find it.
