The Medical Serve

Assist the Injured to a chair or furs (if not sure of the wounds inflicted ask, taking careful note of the most serious wounds to be able to treat those first),

If a spar or raid is happening, watch and take careful notes of the injuries, offer a kanda leaf, ask the Master/Mistress to chew the leaf and to swallow the juices, but not to swallow the kanda leaf itself, for it is very toxic, if the Master/Mistress looks as if He/She is going to pass out, do not give Them kanda leaf, for this may cause Them to swallow it accidentally and end in death. Have the Master/Mistress spit out the kanda leaf after chewing it a bit and They start to feel the effects of the leaf, They do not need to have it in Their mouth for any longer, If involved in fighting the Free may not wish to have Their senses dulled by kanda.

Remove or cut away any leathers or clothing around the wounds, add green herbal powder to a bowl, then add the paga and mix it, dip a rep cloth in the mixture to clean the wound/wounds. If there are a large amount of Injured to heal, add the green powder to the bota, shake it, then pour from it, it is then easier to travel from Rarius to Rarius and more time efficient,

Smooth numbing salve to the wound edges and ask permission to pull free any knives, quivas or arrows remaining in the wound, check nothing is embedded near major blood vessels and use a soft cloth for pressure, if bleeding continues use scalpels and tweezers to ensure there are no smaller objects left in any wounds,

Do not pull the arrow out of a wound, check its location, if it is through a major artery, cauterizing will be needed, Break the end of the arrow sticking out of a leg or arm off, then push it through, if the arrow is inside the chest or another part of the body which prevents it being pushed through, the area will have to be cut larger to remove the arrow, (most have barbs which will cause more damage being pulled back out of a body)

The cauterising iron is used for any serious active bleeding wounds, prepare the Free for this, it is painful, try not to cauterise around the muscles of the arms for this will cause scar tissue to form and may make it impossible for the injured to remain a Warrior,

Search for anything that may be hidden in the wound that may keep the wound open and bleeding, if metal, clothing or bone is found, remove it, then the bleeding should ease, suture the wound, mattress stitches for deep wounds, herring bone stitches with finer gut for surface wounds, sprinkle on the green antiseptic powder, smooth on healing salve and cover the wound with a soft cloth, bandaging it in place, for surface wounds, clean with paga, and apply the healing ointment, leave uncovered or apply light gauze,
for bruising apply ice, from the cold room if available, wrap the ice in a soft cloth and apply to the area, broken bones need to be set, splinted and tightly bandaged, before the injuries are attended to by the Healer,

Tendons must be sutured with mattress stitching, this is definitely only an emergency procedure before the Healer can get to work, the mattress stitch is a strong enough stitch to hold, for the tendon is what holds muscles to the bone,

When performing a medical serve, be very descriptive, list each and every little thing that is done, During the healing stage, make sure to check on the Rarius/Raria daily, change the dressing on His wound, make sure there is no infection setting in, if you find infection, let the Healer know immediately.

Please remember that all Medical Treatment should be posted to the Healing Boards accessed from the Entrance Page, so that there is a record available for the Camp Healer.
