Sigma Chi is often referred to as the gentlemen’s fraternity, and they are recognized on the UBC campus and in the community as leaders. They are actively involved with many organizations and endeavors, constantly striving to aid those in need, and better their surroundings. They treat people with dignity and respect, and in turn their reputation is one of the utmost standing. The Delta Omicron Chapter of Sigma Chi plainly breeds leadership. That is why it is clear within their ranks it may be noted that they have participated in most of UBC's and SFU's clubs, organizations and initiatives, often with significant roles. As well, the Sigs are noticeable in many philanthropic endeavors and the student government. Indeed UBC Sigs have held positions on the AUS, SUS, and AMS in positions of the Executive, as Senators, as Representatives, and even as Presidents of our Alma Mater on multiple occasions. The group is diverse, and strongly dedicated to the pursuit of their ideals. Their Chapter can be renowned also, as one of the first chapters on the UBC campus to officially drop its "race clause," in 1967. Although, they had already taken measures to allow a diversity of membership prior. Other fraternities quickly followed suit. They are still one of the most diverse organizations on campus, a fact that is easily visible, when considering all the brothers of different interests, ethnicities, beliefs, and backgrounds. This diversity helps them to have an extremely strong brotherhood rooted in positive ideals. Charity work for this chapter of Sigma Chi is also a high priority. They are known to throw the event of 'Derby Days'. Established many years ago this has the sole purpose of benefiting the Children's Miracle Network for Children’s Hospitals. This is known to be the largest Greek philanthropic event internationally, as well as amongst the Greek system at UBC, raising thousands each year for the worthy cause. As well as a host of other philanthropic projects, the chapter also excels at sports, has spectacular social events, and does extremely well scholastically. The UBC/SFU Sigs are well rounded men who set a good example for the fraternities, and any organization or person to follow. They have strong alumni relations, and international ties to neighboring chapter of Sigma Chi who they often visit on road trips. Sigma Chi is the largest social fraternity represented at UBC both in terms of international chapters and international membership, with well over 200 chapters across the United States and Canada and over 200,000 living Sigma Chi’s around the world. They have been proudly representing themselves on campus for over five decades, and they have good reason to proudly continue. |
