PROFILE

The University of Cape Coast was established in 1962 out of a dire need for highly qualified and skilled manpower in education to provide leadership and enlightenment. Thus, it was established to train graduate teachers for second cycle institutions; Teacher Training Colleges; and Technical Institutions, a mission that the two Universities existing then were unequipped to fulfill.

The University has since its establishment added to its functions the training of educational planners, administrators and agriculturalists. The University is, therefore, playing a role that is unique and vital to the education enterprise of the nation. In pursuance of its mission, the University has been responding fully to the changing needs of the entire educational system of the country. It has also re-structured its degree program from B.A., B.Sc. and B.Ed. in education to B.A./B.Sc. with non-education content and a B.Ed., which is a professional qualification in Education. This is to allow flexibility and choice in its course offerings and thus cater for specific needs of students, while still focusing on its mission.

THE CAMPUS
The University, which is five kilometres west of Cape Coast municipality, is located on a hill over-looking the Atlantic, and operates on two campuses: The Southern Campus (Old Site) and the Northern Campus (New Site). Two of the most important historical sites in Ghana, Elimina and Cape Coast Castles, are only a few kilometres from the University. The establishment of the University was a befitting tribute to this historic town and the cradle of education in Ghana. Cape Coast is now a growing tourist town with its rich history and monuments.

A candidate for admission to the degree program in the University of Cape Coast must have obtained either credit in at least FIVE subjects, including English Language in the General Certificate of Education examination (or its approved equivalent). In addition three subjects must have been passed at the Advanced Level.

OR

A candidate must have passes in the three SSS core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Science. Passes in three SSS elective subjects relevant to the chosen program with aggregate not exceeding 24. A better grade in any of the remaining core subjects, namely, Agriculture and Environmental Studies, Life Skills and Ghanaian Languages will substitute for Core Science in the case of applicants in the non-science based elective subjects i.e., General Arts, Business Studies and Visual Arts provided, however, that the candidate has obtained at least Grade E in the Core Science. Candidates must also satisfy Faculty and Departmental Entry requirements. Details are obtainable from the University’s Admissions Office.

Mature Students
Mature persons applying for admission, who do not satisfy the above requirements, must have reasonable education and working experience and should have attained the minimum age of 30 years at the time of submitting their applications. Successful candidates are selected on the basis of a series of tests, a long essay, and an interview.

Higher Degrees
Applicants for admission to higher degrees must hold good bachelor’s degrees in appropriate subjects. All higher degrees are open to graduates of other approved universities. For Masters degrees, at least two semesters must be spent studying in the university. For PhD, at least two semesters for graduates of the University of Cape Coast and at least four semesters for those of other universities must be spent in this university. Thereafter, subject to approval by the Board of Graduate Studies, candidates may pursue their studies outside the University. Graduate Diploma courses are of a two-semester full-time or four-semester part-time duration

Visiting Studentship (Special Admissions)
This operates under the principle of Academic Credit Transfer, requiring the recognition of one's higher educational institutions courses, study periods and examinations, which have been completed by another high educational institution. Under this scheme, students who have completed two years of higher education at their overseas Universities are admitted to spend a third year of study at the University of Cape Coast under close supervision of the host institution, after which they return to complete their final year at their home university. Acceptance is normally based on the applicant’s previous academic record and his/her proposed program. Applicants must have an academic record that is above average. Credits earned under this special study program are transferable. To be eligible for participation in this program, therefore one must have obtained a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.00.
