The Forensic Science Association at the University of Central Florida
functions to provide assistance and encourage camaraderie
to those in the forensic science program,
as well as increase the field's exposure in the community
and to those interested in pursuing a related career. |
The Forensic Science Association has four main objectives, each of which is placed under the role of a committee within the organization. These four objectives are academic excellence, community outreach, social integration, and club fundraising.
First, the Association understands that the most important aspect of attending college is academic, and as such, the junior and senior members of the club serve to guide and assist the younger members through the program. In the past, the Association has arranged guest speakers, tours of laboratory facilities, informal academic advising and assistance with class scheduling, and has provided help with the preparation of scientific resumes and laboratory reports. Additional academic advisement sessions have also covered the processes for both getting involved in research as well as securing a meaningful internship prior to graduation.
Second, the Association understands that both college and the Forensic Science degree program are largely social and that a healthy social network is vital to success. Throughout each semester, a variety of social events are scheduled in order to facilitate a sense of camaraderie, friendship, and above all else, cooperation between members.
The Association also gives back to the community through its outreach program. In the past, this has involved assistance and demonstrations in high school chemistry labs and elementary science fairs as well a partnership with the Orlando Science Center. During the Fall semesters, the Association teams up with the campus chapter of the American Chemical Society to celebrate National Chemistry Week.
Each February the Association lobbies the Student Senate for funding to send a group of members to the annual American Academy of Forensic Sciences convention. Last year, 20 members were sent to the conference in Washington, DC to represent the program here at UCF. In the past these conferences have been held in San Antonio, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, and New Orleans. This year, the conference will be held in Denver.
