Unit Designation: Light Carrier Squadron 39 (CARSQA39)
Ship(s): Island-class light marine assault carrier (LMAC)
| Unit Overview |
|
The 39th Light Carrier squadron forms the transport element for the 612th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Flying the new and pioneering Island class light marine assault carriers, which comprise the latest in high-tech innovations to be used in Marine Corps service, just six of these ships are capable of transporting an entire marine expeditionary unit (including armor, support personnel, and supplies) to any destination in the Federation or abroad. Units of this class deployed to Starbase 672 "Hephaestus" include the squadron flagship Shetland (NCC-69814-H), carriers Guernsey (NCC-69815-E), Key West (NCC-51222-G), Monhegan (NCC-714833-C), and Matinicus (NCC-715222-D), and the auxiliary support vessel Nantucket (NCC-777144-B). Its ships are informally known within the marine garrison aboard the station as the "Mighty 39th." |
| DESIGN MISSION OBJECTIVES |
Pursuant to Starfleet Marine Corps Directives 372.7 and 1425.5, and Federation Security Council General Policy, the following directives have been established for the Island class light marine assault carrier (LMAC) project: 1. Provide integrated transport, deployment, and on-site field support capabilities to marine expeditionary unit (MEU) personnel engaged in a wide spectrum of crises and contingencies. 2. Continue to maintain the Starfleet Marines Corps objective of "tactical integrity" (defined as a balanced force reaching the same location at the same time). 3. Be capable of independent or group operation both as a headquarters vessel for extended marine operations, or operation as an individual ship unit in air, space, and/or surface assaults. 4. Independent operation mode capability to meet or exceed one month under combat conditions. 5. Serve as a support and transport vehicle in times of war and emergencies. 6. Provide non-critical functions such as the transport of personnel and cargo when necessary, and extended aid. 7. Provide a mobile platform for testing and implementation of mission-specific or new technology, specifically in the areas of navigation, defense, and logistics. |
