Ultra Classic

Ultra Classic is a chrome/theme combo that I've put together in order to make Mozilla look even more classic than the designers had in mind. My main goal was to come up with a way to make the Mozilla look more like Netscape 3.

Ultra Classic requires a 2 part installation process:

The first part involves using the Jar files, supplied by Ultra Classic, in place of the original comm.jar, messenger.jar, and chatzilla.jar files that came with Mozilla. The replacement copies of these files make the layout changes, separate toolbar, and extra buttons appear.

The second part installs like any other theme. Click on the install link and switch themes.

To install: (Version 1.77)
1) Goto the mozilla/chrome directory and copy comm.jar, messenger.jar, and chatzilla.jar to a safe place. You'll need the original copies of these files if you decide to remove Ultra Classic from your system.
2) Get ucfiles177.zip from the download page.
3) Unzip ucfiles177.zip to the mozilla/chrome directory.
4) Using Mozilla, go back to the download page and click on the install button.
5) Click yes, and wait for it to download.
6) Switch the theme to "Ultra Classic".
7) Restart Mozilla for the changes to take effect.

The latest version 1.77 was built off of and tested on Mozilla 1.7.7.  It may or may not work properly with other builds.

Update :

04-18-2005: Mozilla 1.7.7 fixes a number of security holes. With all of the Adware/Spyware/Crapware on the net, it's best not to procrastinate too long. A new set of .jar files, based off of Mozilla 1.7.7, is available on the download page. This should fix the Ultra Classic - related compatibility issues with the current release of Mozilla.

02-27-2005: The .jar files, included with Ultra Classic 1.7 aren't compatible with Mozilla 1.7.5  Later this week, Mozilla 1.7.6 is expected to be released. At that time I'll upload a new set of .jar files.

08-15-2004: Ultra Classic 1.7 is ready. It turns out that the old jar-installer works fine, I just wasn't using it right.

08-14-2004: Since it has been over a year, an update is long over-due. It looks like they've changed the way themes are installed. Right now, I have a hard-wired copy of Ultra Classic running on Mozilla 1.7.2, but I'll have to wait on releasing it until I figure out how the new install method works.

07-28-2003: Ultra Classic 1.4 is ready. New: Added icons for cut/copy/paste in composer, and a taskbar-cookie icon in Navigator. Bugfix: Fixed the broken icons in the align and insert toolbars in the "Mail & News" message compose window.

03-19-2003: Ultra Classic 1.3f is ready and has been posted on the download page. Mozilla 1.3 has a really ugly splash screen. A link to a better looking replacement splash screen has been added to the "links" section of this page.

02-13-2003: Ultra Classic 1.3 Beta has been pulled. Mozilla 1.3 Beta is unstable and unusable when run under Windows 95/98/me.  See Bug 192294 and this thread for further information. The problem was fixed in nightly build 2003021308, but this build isn't nearly as stable as the 2003013108 build that I was previously using.  Ultra Classic 1.3c, based on nightly build 2003013108, has been posted on the download page.  Hopefully Mozilla's stability issues will be fixed by the time 1.3 final is released.

02-12-2003: Ultra Classic 1.3 Beta has been released.

12-26-2002: Ultra Classic 1.21 is ready and available for download on the the download page. Bug #22056 was fixed in this Mozilla milestone, so that's one less thing to deal with. The "mail-message compose" iconset should've been included with 1.0, but wasn't. That's fixed this time around. Some minor cleanup work was done on the Navigator iconset, as well.

12-23-2002: After having been moth-ball'd for nearly 6 months, work on the Ultra Classic project has resumed.

06-29-2002: Ultra Classic 1.0 is complete. This is a "full-app" version of Ultra Classic. Check it out on the download page.

06-02-2002: Ultra Classic 1.0 RC3 is ready. (same functionality as before) Geocities is getting better all the time. In addition to their lack of storage, they now have a new feature: "no ftp access". What's next? Automatic site deletion? Anyway, things have been shuffled around a bit in order to make room.

03-15-2002: Ultra Classic .99 has been posted on the download page. A slightly-modified version of the bugzilla patch has been incorporated into this version of Ultra Classic. As a result the pictures/text/pictures&text pref is working. (bug #22056)

03-04-2002: Ultra Classic .98 is ready and has been posted on the download page.
