A MOMENT WITH OUR MINISTER
"Spot-bilt" "Made in the USA" are inscribed on the bottom of the soles of my softball shoes.
As I looked at them after arriving at the parsonage, following our softball game, it appeared that maybe they should be replaced with news ones. Looking at them again and holding them in my hands, I began to think about their history and how they had become a significant part of my life.
The more I ponder, the less sure I am that they should be replaced. They have been on the pitcher's mound in several
communities and softball diamonds. At times they have been able to complete the run from home plate to first base, second
base, third base and home plate. They have been part of plays from the infield where a batter on the opposing Team has been
thrown out.
Season after season. Tournaments out of town. Losses. Wins. Always faithful. Willing to patiently wait from the last game of the season until the first game of the next season. Always dependable.
I remember the pair this pair replaced. It was a blistering hot day in a small Kansas town, on our way to or from Colorado. The
sports store in town had this good pair of softball shoes on sale. That pair finally wore out, coming apart at the soles. (I have kept the Kansas pair).
We're still learning the lesson that "new is not always better." Maybe that's the scenario with my softball shoes.
While Jesus replaced the "old" covenant with the "new" covenant (Law and Grace), He clearly stated that He came to "fulfill"
the Law and not to destroy the Law. To give us a heart of flesh to replace the heart of stone.
Thank God. He makes all things New!
(From our last visit, a follow-up. My brakes are still working well and not squeaking as much).
your friend and Pastor, John
