A Moment With Our Minister
"DOORS"
An unknown reality before my accident is the significance of doors. It
has been my privilege to graduate from a hospital bed, to a wheel chair, to
a walker, to crutches, to a prosthesis (with assistance). The goal is to
a prosthesis without assistance.
Doors are a necessity. Without them we would be in big trouble. I
don't know when it was, nor do I know the inventor of the door closer. What
I do know is that he/she changed our way of life.
Some doors have two closers! Maybe I am myopic, if so, please forgive
me for my shortsightedness. But why do we need door closers? My parents
taught us children to close the door after we opened it. And, don't
slam the door, because that is "wooden cussing"!
For example. I purchased gas at a service station. One door was used
to enter to pay for the gas. It had a certain level of resistance to
open. Assuming the exit door had the same amount of resistance, I got a
surprise. It opened with less resistance. Taken off guard, I nearly lost my
balance (on the crutches), which could have resulted in a tragic fall on the
concrete.
If you think I am in favor of taking door closers off doors, you are
correct. Life would be simpler and you would have to remember "if you
open the door, close it"!
As we enter the year 2003, there will be many doors to enter. Some
should, and must be, entered. Others should not be entered. You and I must
decide which doors to enter, which doors we dare not enter. We as a
congregation are faced with "door" decisions.
The last book of the Bible speaks about an invitation relating to a
door. "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock; if any one hears my voice and
opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him and he with me."
(Revelation 3:20)
In the New King James Version Interlinear Reference the reader is
referred to the Song of Solomon 5:2, where the Shulamite (young Palestinian
woman) responds to the knock of her lover (at the door). Also reference to
John 14:23b, "We will come to him and make our home with him."
Have you heard the knock (of Christ) on the door of your heart? What
have you done to "open" the door? When you invite Christ in, you'll
experience His love and know the true meaning of home. He will then lead you to the door(s) you should go through.
My wish for you and our Church in 2003 is that God will guide us to the
doors He wants us to enter. As we go through them we will have a
wonderful new year.
your friend and Pastor, John
