July 2002
"I'm out of here!" You may have heard this expression, even recently,
as
I did. As I was finishing the meal of two simple items I enjoy the
most,
a baked potato and salad, it was late afternoon, at the time of a shift
change. "I'm out of here in four minutes," said a young employee to
the
other restaurant workers.
June is a very active month on many people's calendars. There are
graduations, weddings, open houses and the welcome experience of
warmer
weather and the growth of greenery.
If not verbalized, I am sure it was in the thought pattern of a lot of
high school seniors. "I'm out of here!" No more exams; deadlines are
a
thing of the past. What a relief! College and graduate students
experience some of the same emotions. This kind of disciplined
learning
is not something a person anticipates for the rest of life. Thank the
Lord, pressure is not forever. Hopefully.
Sad to say, for millions of people in the world, at the end of each
work
week, "I'm out of here" is a regular reaction. I don't have to be
involved in my job until the beginning of the next week. If only I had
another kind of job how much better life would be. Life would be worth
living.
Do you suppose Jesus ever had the temptation to say to His heavenly
Father, "I'm out of here"? His life was threatened. He was called to
task, when casting out devils, that He was doing it by the power of
Beelzebub (a heathen deity to whom the Jews ascribed supremacy among
evil spirits). Tortured, spit upon, His beard plucked out. Not very
exciting.
It is very correct. Life is not always a "bed of roses". And that is
one of the reasons Jesus came from heaven to earth. To redeem us and
give us a reason for living, regardless of what life brings to us.
Aren't you grateful that He (Jesus) understands?
So the next time you are tempted to respond to life, "I'm out of here",
remember that Jesus wants to help you find a deeper meaning to life
than
that kind of philosophy. He (Jesus) didn't leave our earth until His
mission was completed. And He will enable you to do the same. How
marvelous!
your friend and Pastor, John
