A MOMENT WITH OUR MINISTER
(It was only a cookie, but maybe it was a lot more.)
Experience tells me that many Churches and Pastors do not stay in touch with congregants and members who come to that time in their lives when a Medical Care Facility is their present and their future. The apparent attitude is that life is over. Their contribution to Church life and God is also over.
My question is, "if that is your attitude and/or your Church's attitude, where is your guarantee that you may not have the same experience before the end of your life?" You might want to think about that.
I have endeavored to make it a practice of ministry to regularly visit such persons. One does not have to spend a lot of time in this kind of visit (ministry) with each person. For me, regularity is the goal. Most persons relate well to consistency.
This particular pastoral visit, two members of our Church were seated at a table in the dining hall. Some mention was made about cookies. An attendant went to get me a cookie. She was gone a length of time and returned "cookieless". She apologized and I forgot about what had happened.
The other day I was making a pastoral visit with the same persons and we were seated at the same table. Evidently, the cookie supply had been replenished because the same kind lady brought me a cookie. Though I had forgotten, she had remembered.
Little things, insignificant events, small deeds, what appears to amount to nothing in the eyes of most people, is what much of life is made of. Stop. Think about it. Jesus did.
"A cup of cold water, given in my Name, will not lose it's reward." Numbering of the hairs of our head. "The lilies of the field, Solomon in all of his glory was not arrayed (dressed) like one of these." The sparrow. Not one falls to the ground without our heavenly Father's notice. "Are you not of much more value than one of these?"
I will miss visiting with you next month, since we are combining July and August mailings. I trust you will have a wonderful summer doing "cookie" things in the Name of and for Christ and others. Jesus has promised, if we do so, "we shall in no way lose our reward."
God's richest and best, is my prayer for you.
your friend and Pastor, John
