"BY THE BEDSIDE"
"It is much easier to stand by the bedside than to be in the bed."
(Patti Hansen, older daughter of Ellie Moore.)
This statement became a reality to me on Tuesday morning, October 1st.
I was just completing a two mile run, with the church parsonage in view,
when a semi and I came together.
An emergency call was received by the medics in Marshall. Early on
they called the Air Medics in Kalamazoo (helicopter). Because of the wisdom
of this call by the Marshall Medics, my life was spared. This was
miracle number one.
The surgeon at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo stated , in
Ellie's presence, following the first sur-gery, that there was no way
they could pull the skin from my body to cover the wound from the leg
amputation (right leg, above the knee).
With surgery number four the surgeon accomplished what he said was
impossible -- miracle number two. As a result I was saved "weeks or
months" of surgery(ies).
I am now completing two weeks of therapy and training at Mary Free Bed
Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, Grand Rapids. The first step
toward a prosthesis has been taken. The doctor has ordered a "shrinker"
to be placed on my right leg. The "shrinker" begins the process of
shaping the leg to receive a prosthesis.
The Prosthetist here, with 30 years of experience, is saying that I
should be able to be fitted with a prosthesis for my leg by the middle
of December. This would be followed by therapy. The length of time for
therapy varies from person to person.
This experience has taught me the truth of the opening statement of
this message. I am learning what a rich privilege was mine -- to be "by the
bedside instead of in the bed". This is a very difficult adjustment
for me --
to be "in the bed" rather than "by the bed".
With your continued prayers and God's continuing mercy, my hope is to
be "by the bedside" once again.
Words are inadequate to express the deep appreciation Ellie and I have
for your prayers, words of encourage-ment, phone calls, cards, letters,
personal greetings, and visits. THANK YOU and please know we need, and
are counting on, your continued prayers.
I will be working with the Staff/Parish Committee regarding what is
wise and advisable in the transition from healing to a return to pastoral
responsibilities and schedule. Linda Lee M. serves as Chairperson
of the Staff/Parish Committee.
your friend and Pastor, John
