September 1999
I couldn't 't believe what I was being told. But it was true.
Meeting with a group of colleagues summer jobs of people were mentioned. One of our colleagues
told us of a young lady in West Michigan who had a summer job. This young lady was working all
summer in order to be able to "buy clothes" enabling her to meet the standards of students attending
this particular high school!
Maybe it might appear to be understandable if this young lady were an exception. Sad to say she is
not an exception. Just the other day I was made aware that the to afford, or not afford issue is
present in our high school.
Do you suppose the time has arrived when parents should urge school boards to pass a resolution
that all students' clothes will be the same?, i.e., uniforms. There are those insisting it makes a
difference - even academically.
The Holy Scriptures have a lot to say about clothing. Check your Bible concordance. You may be
surprised. Both Old and New Testaments.
In the greatest sermon ever preached by the greatest Preacher who ever lived, the subject of
clothes? was included "And why worry about clothes?
Look how the wild flowers grow. They do not work or make clothes for themselves. But I tell you
that not even King Solomon with all his wealth had clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers........
Won't He be all the more sure to clothe you?" Matthew 6:28-29; 39b (Todays English
Version).
May God grant that our Church shall never be guilty of judging one by the "clothes" one wears.
Amen.
your friend and Pastor, John
