September 2001
Our new phone books have just arrived. On the front cover is a recommendation which contains a word made significant to me
by a wonderful member of a Church I was privileged to serve.
"Recycle me in October, 2002". I learned the significance of the word "recycle" from our Church member. She literally taught
me in such a kind, persuasive way about recycling that I, to this day, have a difficult time not recycling. My conscience literally
"pricks" me if I think of transgressing.
School has just begun. Students are in school to be taught. I consider myself to stir be in school. Learning opportunities are
constantly presenting themselves to he taken advantage of in one way or another. The suggestion that when one ceases to learn,
one ceases to live, is a truism.
What have you recently learned? And who, or what, was the teacher? Experience, you know, is a part of the learning process.
Or are you going to he stubborn and heady to refuse to learn ? Remember that, if you refuse to learn, you are the loser .
Part of the process of learning is the willingness to be taught. To admit that one doesn't have all of the knowledge there is to
know about a particular subject is no sign of ignorance.
"Oh", but you say "that person isn't smart enough to teach me". Should that be your attitude, hopefully you will reconsider. No
one knows EVERYTHING.
From my memory of life, the only persons who know EVERYTHING are those in Junior High. Please, Junior Highers, I am not
picking on you. I am just reflecting about my own life. It is amazing how little I knew then! Thank God I got through that part of
my life and began to learn.
My hope and prayer for all of my student friends, kindergarten through graduate school, is that you will always he teachable. If
you practice this life-style, you will grow to be a very wise person. Read the book of PROVERBS through each month. This is
one of the very best ways I know of to appreciate leaning and leaning opportunities.
My prayer for you is that God win grant you a wonderful life of learning..
The author of the book of Hebrews writes of Jesus, that "He learned obedience through what He suffered." (Hebrews 5:8b,
New Revised Standard).
your friend and Pastor, John
