January 2006
"PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE"
As I write this, we are quickly approaching Christmas and all of the activity and excitement that surrounds it. As you read this, the dust is probably beginning to settle and you’re probably trying to catch your breath from all that has just transpired during this Christmas; or maybe if the mail is quick, you may still be immersed in all the activities of the season with family and friends. But I want to take a moment to look beyond all the hustle and bustle of Christmas to the New Year.
2006 is upon us. Where has the last year gone? Maybe it’s just me; time seems to go faster every year as I get older. But now, here we are on the verge of a new year. It is our tradition to make New Years resolutions to change ourselves for the better as we embark on the fresh start that the New Year offers us. Every year we make those resolutions and more often then not they seem to fall by the wayside as we journey through; sometimes sooner, sometimes later – but still we try. And try we must. As Christians, we are moved by the Spirit that has found a home within us – the Spirit of God – the Holy Spirit. The Spirit beckons us to move forward, day by day, ever closer to the likeness of Christ.
New Years is an excellent time for each of us to stop for a moment and reflect upon where we are on our faith journey. Where are we like Christ? Where do we fall short? What can we do as individuals and as a church family to continue to move ever closer to our goal of being more like the example that Jesus Christ set for us?
On January 21st we will be coming together as a church family to set our vision for the future. We will be starting promptly at 9:00 a.m. to establish the direction that, we as the Union City UMC, will be taking in the coming years. I humbly ask all who can possibly attend to be there; this is a very important day for the future of the church and as many members as possible need to have a voice. If you’re not there, your voice will not be heard. I am excited about what God has in store for us in the next few years. God is moving us forward, but we need to be moving together as a team – as a family bonded in Christ. We need to be sharing God’s vision for the reality of God’s Kingdom; a vision of hope – a vision of love.
Enjoy this Christmas and New Years season, but never forget the true reason we celebrate. Take the time to thank the God who loved each one of us enough to send Jesus Christ as the greatest gift that could ever be given.
Grace and Peace, The Rev. Rob Hughes
