A MOMENT WITH OUR MINISTER

“Take Time Out”

As I sit here thinking about the month of November two words come to mind: busy and important. As I write this, we are two short weeks away from one of the busiest weeks of the year for us and probably one of the most important (apart from the Advent and Easter seasons). It’s not hard to sense the intensity building.

October 31st, is not only Halloween, it is the culmination of our month of prayer, pondering and preparation in relation to our stewardship campaign. Consecration Sunday is a time of decision and commitment for each of us that I pray will lead to spiritual growth both individually and corporately as well as renewed dedication to the ministry of Jesus Christ. It is also a time to celebrate that commitment as we prepare for another year of ministry both within our church and beyond. I am looking forward to celebrating with you in response to what God can and will do through our church family. Please plan to attend the catered lunch following the 11:00 a.m. service.

Then November 2nd, only two days later, is Election Day. We live in precarious times and this election will decide issues that will have long lasting impact upon our country, our state and our local community. Not only will we be determining who will lead our country for the next four years, we are voting on proposals that will have a long lasting effect on our community for many years to come. The seriousness of this election can’t be overstated. I wouldn’t think of trying to dictate to you how to vote on any of these issues; your vote is your own and yours is the right to decide how to cast that vote. I only ask that you remember that every vote counts and earnestly pray, ponder and prepare here as well; seek God’s guidance in your decision process. Then get out and vote – exercise your right – play your part in keeping alive the freedoms that so many have given their lives to protect.

Five days later, November 7th, is our Charge Conference immediately following the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Much work has gone into the preparation for this conference, and much work is left to be done. But, I have faith that all will be done on time. This will also be our first opportunity as a church to meet our new District Superintendent, The Rev. Dr. Jerry DeVine. Please plan to attend.

This is followed by United Methodist Women’s Sunday on November 21st, Thanksgiving on the 25th and the first Sunday of Advent on the 28th. It is going to be a busy month.

Now for a pastoral moment – don’t let all the busy-ness of the month distract you from knowing who you are, and more importantly, whose you are. During your busy schedule this month, be sure you make time to just spend time in the presence of our Lord. Don’t cheat yourself out of what is most important, most fulfilling and by far most refreshing.

Grace and Peace,The Rev. Rob Hughes
