"STEWARDS OF GOD’S BLESSINGS"
What a whirlwind of activity we have had over the last few months! An incredible Vacation Bible School program, the cornerstone celebration, the Sunday School kickoff, the birth of a new evening women’s circle, the fall start of our youth program, our UMW’s memorial service and potluck, and of course, our Charge Conference. The list seems endless and I’m sure that I’ve missed some other activities that are worthy of mention, and for that I apologize.
The point here is that these things don’t just happen. There is a great deal of preparation and hard work that goes on behind the scenes and I would like to take a moment here to thank all of you who have given of your time and talent to make all these events such an outstanding success. They wouldn’t have happened without your dedication and commitment to our various ministry opportunities.
But I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention all those who diligently work, week after week, month after month, on those continuing ministry efforts like: the prayer chain, or the Thrift Shop, or the Christian Preschool, or our evangelism ministries or the various boards and committees that diligently press on to do the work of God as well. Again I offer to you the well deserved, heartfelt thanks on behalf of those you serve, both within the church and throughout our community.
Fall is the time that many churches focus on stewardship and that’s what I’ve been talking about. October is traditionally the month that we, at Union City UMC, kickoff our Stewardship Campaign. It is a time were we pledge our support to the ministries of the church; not only financially, through our tithes, offerings and gifts, but also through the offering of ourselves through our time and talents to the work of the church for the Kingdom of God.
We are called to be good stewards of what we have as a church, but more than that, we are called to be good stewards of all that God has blessed us with individually, as citizens of this great country, and as caretakers of the world we live in. We are responsible and accountable to God for how we use all that we have been given; not only our money and material possessions, but also (and just as importantly) or talents and our time. God calls us to manage wisely and the time will come when we will each be held accountable for the kind of stewards we have been with what God has entrusted to us.
As members of the United Methodist Church, we have made a covenant with God and the church to give our support through our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service. We are not called to give in just one of these areas; we are called to give to all. For our relationship with God to grow deeper, it is essential for us to be involved in some type of ministry for the kingdom. Critical positions are still open on several leadership committees in this church, as well as the essential position of recording secretary for the Administrative Council. Opportunities to serve are always available and we are always looking for committed people who want to make a difference. If you are willing to offer your time and talents to the service of God through the church or one of its ministries, please contact the church office or call me or stop by and let’s talk about what you can do.
Grace and Peace, The Rev. Rob Hughes
