“UCUMC Mission: Our mission is to love God, love one another, and make disciples for Jesus Christ.”

SPIRITUAL ADVENTURE COMING
As I came into work this morning, I noticed something
strange; a rainbow. It wasn’t just a dimly lit strip
of color, it was full and vibrant and beautiful; it
stopped me dead in my tracks. I can’t remember the
last time I saw a rainbow at 7:30 in the morning. This
was something special. As I marveled at this expansive
display before me, I was reminded of God’s promise in
the rainbow and God’s faithfulness to us as his
children. So often we get so caught up in things – the
business of the day, that we miss or take for granted
the faithfulness of God’s blessings in our lives. How
mundane life becomes when we lose sight of God’s
loving hand – God’s grace in our lives.
God has blessed each of us in so many ways; ways too
numerous to count; often in ways we don’t even
realize. Each of us has been blessed with gifts and
talents and life . . . Jesus said in John 10:10, “I
have come that they may have life and have it more
abundantly.” An abundant life is a life that is filled
to overflowing with vitality and purpose and meaning;
a life that God desires for each of us – a life that
God offers us freely. The rainbow reminds us of God’s
promises and God’s faithfulness.
Beginning the week of October 8th, we, as a church,
will be embarking on a 40 day spiritual adventure.
Together, we’ll spend six weeks of rediscovering who
we are as children of God and disciples of Jesus
Christ. We’ll rediscover our true source of strength,
as well as reconnect with God where we are and then
grow deeper in our connection with him and each other.
This is going to be something much different than any
stewardship campaign in recent years. In fact, I am
hesitant to even call this a stewardship campaign
because it’s not simply about money, it’s about us;
individually and corporately as the church. But then
again, stewardship, in its fullness, is about much
more than simply money. As Christians, we are all
called to be good stewards of our world and all that
God has given us.
As we embark on this adventure, our success depends
on our commitment to be active participants in the
program. It is essential that each one of us commit to
the daily readings, to a Sunday school class or small
group and each of us be at church each of the 6 weeks
of the program. Six weeks is not a long time, but it
is long enough for each of us to move forward into a
fuller, more bountiful life, both individually and as
a church; a life in a deepening relationship with God,
Jesus Christ, each other and the people we are called
to serve.
Psalm 34 invites us to “taste and see that the Lord
is good; blessed are those who take refuge in him.”
God’s promises are not just for some, but for all who
are willing to seek him with open hearts and minds. So
during this time, let it be one of discovery and great
reward for all of us. Take my hand and the loving hand
of God. Let us discover together the rich and abundant
life God has for all of us.
Grace and Peace, The Rev. Rob Hughes
