SOHL HISTORY

So far this semester has been amazing!  The wonderful Russ Mason kicked off the semester and the Chinese New Year with a preliminary T'ai Chi class.  Click here to email him about his weekly T'ai Chi classes.  Next, chiropractor Dr. Chad Laurence came to talk to us about some dangerous ingredients that companies hide in our food.  Visit his website to learn more about his practice and the services that he offers.

Sorry I haven't updated this area in so long!  We had an explosive first semester!  On November 5th, we raised $650 for the
Rainforest Alliance and the Brazilian Amazon through our Rock for the Earth benefit concert!  We also had a great time with all of our speakers!  Thanks everyone for a great semester...get geared up for Spring 2005!

Last week we had a blast learning about
herbs and homeopathy with Mary Anderson.  She taught us how to make yummy herbal nut balls, made with healthy tahini and almond butters, carob chips, coconut shavings and five healthy herbs.  Then we dug in and made our own tasty herb balls.  They were so good!  Thanks Mary for a wonderful class!  We learned a lot about how to connect one-on-one with your herbs and your food and nurture your food while at the same time nurturing your body and soul.  Mary is a licensed massage therapist and an herbal practitioner.  Check out her ad and contact her for awesome rates on massage, homemade herbal products and more!

Last night we had a very interesting, uplifting philosophical discussion about
"What is Holistic Living?" with Karen Avino, nursing professor at the University of Delaware.  We discussed how happiness and nurturing our minds and spirits (not just our bodies) can help us maintain wellness and balance in our lives.  Karen brought some fresh spiritual perspectives to the SOHL-mates in attendance and read some really beautiful prayers and stories, which can be used in any religious denomination.  Thanks Karen!  For more information about our speakers, click here.

We have had an incredible few weeks at SOHL!  On Sept. 22, Molly Halbert visited SOHL to talk about the wonderful products of
AVEDA.  We raffled off a ton of Aveda shampoo, soap and lotions, learned about how Aveda helps the environment through their Earth-conscious products, learned some beauty secrets and had a blast!

On Sept. 29, Nikken spokeswoman Christine Kurz came to talk about the positive effects that
magnets have on the body and how they can be used to stimulate blood flow and heal wounds/sickness.  We had fun doing strength tests and testing the water that had been filtered and then magnetically charged.

Last night, Oct. 6 we had the best time getting needles stuck into us with Jeff Gould, certified
acupuncturist!  Jeff, who seems to know an endless amount of information concerning oriental herbs and acupuncture, taught us about this ancient Chinese remedy and "chi" (universal life force energy) and then got to work poking us with sharp needles...which actually doesn't hurt at all!  Jeff was kind enough to raffle off a free initial visit to his clinic worth $65!  Thanks Jeff!

Thank you to all of our speakers and to everyone who came to the classes!  For more information about our speakers, click here.

At the
massage class we held this past Wednesday, we were completely floored when over 80 people showed up to the class!  Thank you so much to everyone who came and showed interest in our group.  Tammy will definitely be back in the spring to teach more about massage!!

We are only 2 weeks into the semester and already SOHL has attracted so many students!  The
Reiki class was amazing!  Over 20 people came to learn about the powers of
Reiki from Kathy Surles and her friend Robin.  While some people had Reiki healing performed on them by Kathy and Robin, others took into the "Ki" (Energy) of the room and meditated or sat and cleared their minds of the busyness of their schedules.  Thanks to everyone who came!
