3/ Revolutionary gel "fixes aging eyes"

People may soon be able to throw away their reading glasses now that scientists say they have invented a gel that corrects sight in ageing eyes.

The treatment involves sucking out the contents of the eye's lens and replacing it with a soft gel.

Lenses need to be able to change shape in order to focus on different things. However, as people get older their lenses harden, making it impossible to focus on close objects.

The lenses of a 40-year-old have only a quarter of the capacity to change shape or "accommodate" as they did just after birth, say the Australian researchers. After the age of 45, most people notice deterioration in their sight and need reading glasses or bifocals.

It was in the late 1980s that scientists first demonstrated that replacing the contents of an ageing rhesus monkey's lens with silicone oil could restore its ability to focus. However, silicone oil gradually leaks from the lens capsule.

Since then, scientists have been trying to find the perfect solution. Now researchers from Melbourne and Sydney have hit upon a siloxane-based material that turns from liquid into gel when exposed to a burst of UV light.

Implanting the gel would be very similar to current cataract surgery except the lens is not replaced. Instead, doctors would make a small incision in the cornea, cut a hole in the lens capsule and suck out the contents. The gel would then be pumped in and transformed into jelly with UV.

Arthur Ho, a member of the Australian government's Vision Cooperative Research Centre, said, "This could be a quick 15-minute procedure."

He hopes that human trails will begin by the end of next year.

Hugh Taylor, director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia in Melbourne, added, "This technique has enormous potential
